Since the beginning of the last century, Oktava has become the biggest electro-acoustic transducer manufacturer in Russia and the former Soviet Union. With the support of leading Russian research centers (VNIIRPA, NIIDS, NIKFI, etc) as well as its own research laboratory, the factory has great technological potential that allows to produce large quantities of professional microphones.
Today most of the products are sold in the United States, Europe and other parts of the world. Major audio magazines and weekly periodicals such as PRODUCTION PARTNER, THE MIX, AUDIOMEDIA, and the New York Times have published reviews of many models of Oktava microphones. Major audio equipment catalogs such as Musician's Friend have put Oktava in the same category with such known names as Neumann, AKG, Rode, Audio-technica, and Shure. Due to high quality and affordable prices, Oktava microphones have become popular with small recording studios and beginning musicians.
The factory was founded in June, 1927 and in 4 years grew from a local workshop to a state plant and became the radio components supplier for 52 regions of Russia from Moscow to Tomsk.
In the 50s and 60s, the plant focused exclusively on the production of microphones and telephones. A strong technological base was developed during these years that was highly recognized at state exhibitions and also made Oktava the biggest and most technologically advanced electro-acoustic transducer manufacturer in the Soviet Union.
The factory went through a few rounds of modernization, and a zero-defect production system was implemented during the 70s. Oktava microphones were used to equip Kremlin meeting rooms as well as the state's biggest TV studio, Ostankino. Oktava loudspeakers were installed in the biggest arenas and squares, including the famous Red Square.
During the 80s and the beginning of the 90s, Oktava started production of a number of new models of microphones, many of which were recognized at the National Exhibition of Industrial Achievements. At that time, the production of hearing aids started.
The first exports abroad took place during the mid-90s, after the factory went through major modernization. Oktava microphones were very well received in the western world for their quality and unprecedented price.
In 2007, the Oktava factory celebrates its 80th anniversary.

June 1927 A mechanical workshop which producing radio components opened in Tula.
May 1929 The workshop developed into "The radio-part" factory.
1930s The Factory becomes Radio components supplier for 52 regions from Moscow to Tomsk.
January 1931 The Factory develops into a still bigger state plant and is attached to the ministry of postal services.
1932-1933 The plant focuses on the production of acoustical-electrical transducers
1932 The first prototype tuned-radio-frequency [TRF] receiver created and manufactured.
1934 The 30-watt dynamic loudspeaker created and manufactured. The first batch of 100 loudspeakers installed in the Moscow squares.
January 1934 The plant participates in the national radio equipment Contest in Moscow.
1935 The 10-watt horn loudspeaker created and manufactured, staying in the production until 1945.
1936 The dynamical microphone developed and put into production.
1936 The radio receiver "T35" created. The sample receiver presented to the VII party meeting
1938 The radio receiver "T37" put into production. At "the technology of communication" exhibition the receiver ("T37") gets the second prize
October 1941 The plant was evacuated to the city of Perm
Beginning of 1942 A group of experts returns from the evacuation and starts the reconstruction of the plant
May 1942 The plant reopens the production of mine-detectors, horn loudspeakers. The production of dynamic microphones started.
1943 The crystal loudspeaker developed.
1943 The plant wins the 1-st prize in the national competition.
1945 The plant wins the 1-st prize in the national competition.169 staff workers are awarded with medals "for excellent work".
1946 "Oktava" ( meaning "Octava") trademark of the plant, reflecting the electrical-acoustical specialty of the plant, created
1948 The 100 watt high-power loudspeaker put into the lot production. The first batch installed in the red square of Moscow.
1949 The carbon powder microphone and the electromagnetic inset receivers put into production.
1949 The first export order for the "SDM" microphone
1951 The radial moving-coil loudspeaker, 25 watt power. manufactured for "the agricultural exhibition " in Moscow.
1954-1956 The first stage of modernization of the plant began. The plant focuses on the telephone/microphone production.
1957 The production of small telephones and moving coil radial loudspeaker for the Russian section at the Brussels exhibition started.
1961 Miniature telephone "D-2" and the dynamic microphones to equip the Kremlin Meeting Palace developed and put into production.
1961 The second stage of modernization of the plant started. The production of the electroacoustic measuring instruments for microphones and telephones started.
1964-1966 The zero defect production system implemented at the plant . The miniature telephone "TM-4" and the ribbon microphone "ML-16" receive the state quality mark.
1967 The plant celebrates its 40th Anniversary
1968 The plant participated in the equipment process for the "Ostankino" tv-centre supplying the "TG-9" headphones and "MD-66", "MC-13" microphones
1977 The plant's 50th Anniversary
1983 "TG-12" headphones and "MD-82" microphones awarded the bronze medal at "National exhibition of industrial achievements".
1984 "MCE-9" microphone awarded the bronze medal at "National exhibition of industrial achievements".
1985 "TDS-2" telephone awarded the bronze medal at "National exhibition of industrial achievements".
1986 "MD-86" microphone awarded with the 2nd Diploma at "National exhibition of industrial achievements".
1993 Hearing aid devices "Electronica" and "Y-03" put into production.
