State Highway 38 (SH-38 or OK-38) is a state highway in Oklahoma. It runs 14.8 miles (23.8 km) in an irregular south-to-north pattern in eastern Alfalfa County from US-64 in Jet to SH-11. Its primary purpose is to provide access to Great Salt Plains State Park, which SH-38 skirts on its eastern edge.[2] The route originally ran from SH-58 towards Carrier and south to U.S. Highway 60 and then-State Highway 15 (now US-412). The route was realigned to its current route by 1963.

[edit] Route description

Route 38 begins at an intersection with U.S. Highway 64 in downtown Jet.[1] The road heads northward, intersecting with local roads. After Walnut Street, Route 38 heads through farmlands and intersects with E0230 Road. Just after the intersection with E0210 Road, Route 38 turns to the east along E0210 Road. The route turns northward again, intersects with local roads and turns to the east once again. At the next turn to the north, Route 38 passes the Vance Air Force Base to the east and Great Salt Plains State Park to the west.[1]

While running along the park border, Route 38 heads to the west now, reaching a lake, where the road turns north.[1] Route 38 leaves the park and continues through farmland, where it intersects local roads. Route 38 comes to an end at State Highway 11, 15 miles north of Jet.[1]

[edit] History

Route 38 was originally assigned to an original alignment from SH-58 in Carrier south to US-60 and SH-15 (now US-412).[3] The route was removed and replaced by current SH-45 and SH-132. By 1963, Route 38 was on its current routing from US-64 in Jet to the terminus with SH-11, 15 miles north.[4]
