The unit works work closely with the 507th Air Refueling Wing (ARW). Mission support units and most administrative staff remain at Will Rogers World Airport, its former home.

205th Electronic Installation Squadron The 205th EI Squadron is under the 137th ALW at Oklahoma City. This squadron is responsible for the installation and upkeep of electronic equipment, such as: ground radar, ground communications, avionic radar, avionic communications and cryptography repair.

In 2005, the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) committee brought an expansion to the 138th Fighter Wing's mission. The base acquired 3 F-16 Block 42 aircraft from the realigned 57th Wing located at Nellis AFB as well as 6 F-16 Block 42 aircraft from 132nd FW located at Des Moines, IA.

Recently, personnel from the 138th FW stood up the Joint Fires Observers Course at Ft. Sill, in Lawton, OK which trains jointly with the Army on aircraft precision-guided weapon employment.

The 138th FW is also the host unit for the Defense Air Sovereignty Alert mission located at Ellington Field in Houston, TX.

On Thursday, March 13, 2008 a 138th Fighter Wing F-16 inadvertently dropped a "shape" on the Canyon Creek Apartment Complex in Tulsa while on a night sortie to Forbes Field in Salina, Kansas. A shape resembles a gravity weapon relative to dimensions, but its payload is merely concrete. In addition to the investigation initiated by the Air National Guard and Air Force, the FBI, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) have launched independent investigations.
