[edit] Summary

Photograph of the famed Blue Hussar (2nd Cavalry Squadron) escort of Sean T. O'Kelly to his inauguration as President of Ireland in 1945 (note: website below gives the wrong date). The image is unique in three ways:

  1. It was the last inauguration at which the famed Irish Presidential Mounted Escort took part. They were disbanded soon afterwards.
  2. It was the only time a president of Ireland went to an inauguration in a coach, the coach of the late Queen Alexandra the Queen Mother.
  3. The standard image of this shot, taken from atop Nelson Pillar, was taken by the Irish Times. Its photographic library, including its iconic photograph of the Hussars and President-elect on O'Connell Street, was one of those lost in the fire. Sgt Ben Halligan's image is now the only known surviving image (albeit inferior to the Irish Times one) to capture the remarkable (and never to be repeated scene) in O'Connell Street.

Rationale: unique and rare pictorial representation of a famous event, displayed by the late Sgt Ben Halligan on his website. (Sgt Halligan died in 2005 and his website is now no longer maintained but for the moment remains in situ here
