Ohr HaTorah Day School is an Orthodox Jewish day school, located in the River Heights neighbourhood of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.
The school was founded in 1998, by a group of parents, who were interested in a combinantion of high-level in both Torah studies and General Studies, which was not available in other schools in Winnipeg.
The school combines Judaic, Hebrew and general studies, emphasizing Torah values and Zionism. Ohr HaTorah is funded by parents' tuition, the Manitoba Education Ministry, The Jewish Federation of Winnipeg and Torah Umesorah.
Ohr HaTorah Day School also operates a full-day day care and a nursery school. Most of the nursery school students continue at Ohr HaTorah, while a minority move on to other Jewish or Public schools.
Ohr HaTorah started the 2007-8 academic year, with over 50 students, ranging in age from 2 years to grade 8. This shows a 100% growth between 2003 and 2007, despite the drop in enrollment in other Jewish schools in Winnipeg [1].
The school has reached the maximum number of students allowed in its current location.
The current Principal is Rabbi David Weksler, who moved to Winnipeg with his family from Israel, as an emissary of the Jewish Agency in 2005 for a 3 year term. He replaced Rabbi Amihai Bannett, who was the first emissary of the Jewish Agency in the school and is currently the Educational Director of "Gesher Shel Zahav", an international educational organization.
