Ogryn

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ogryns are the equivalent of the fantasy ogre in Games Workshop's techno-fantasy war game Warhammer 40,000, and are one of the troop types available to an Imperial Guard army.

In the game setting, Ogryns (or Homo sapiens giganticus) are a variety of abhuman evolved on high-gravity, low-temperature prison planets. They are immensely large, powerful and stupid but extremely loyal once introduced to the Imperial Cult. Ogryns are very large human-like creatures with human flesh-coloured skin and often deformed features. They are mentioned in various sources as being superstitious and very easy to anger. They also have a special respect for Commissars who they see as closest to their beloved Emperor. Those Ogryns who fought as rebels in the Horus Heresy only did so because their superior officers lied to them about which side they were on.

In battle, Ogryns are used as shock troops, wielding heavy automatic shotguns called Ripper Guns, which are also used as clubs. They tend to be claustrophobic and thus are difficult to transport in Chimera APCs. Ogryn units are led by "Bone'eads," who have undergone what is known as Biochemical Ogryn Neural Enhancement (BONE), a procedure that improves their intellect to a low human level.

A squad of Ogryns is a formidable fighting force due to their brute strength and size. They can withstand amounts of small arms fire that would destroy a squad of ordinary humans, are utterly loyal to their regiments, and can unleash vast amounts of brute violence when the situation calls for it - and sometimes when it doesn't.
