Ogden Phipps Handicap

The Ogden Phipps Handicap Ogden Phipps Handicap is a Grade I race for thoroughbred fillies and mares three years of age and up run annually at Belmont Park. First run in 1961 as the Hempstead Handicap, it was not run again until 1970. It was raced under that name until 2002 when it was renamed in honor of prominent owner and breeder, Ogden Phipps (1908-2002). His filly Personal Ensign won this race in 1988.

The race was run at 1 1/2 miles for both sexes in 1961; 6 furlongs in l970 and l97l; a 1 1/8 miles from 1974 to 1994. It was run at Aqueduct from l972 to l974. The current purse is $300,000.

Sky Beauty won this race in 1994 when it was still the Hempstead Handicap. Ta Wee won it in 1970. Serena's Song won it in 1996.
