According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.4 square miles (3.7 km²), of which, 0.7 square miles (1.9 km²) is land and 0.7 square miles (1.8 km²) of it (49.31%) is water. Ogden Dunes is sometimes linked with Portage, Indiana (neighboring city of roughly 36,000), because it has a general lack of the qualities most cities possess (grocery store, post office, restaurants, etc.). A strictly residential community, Ogden Dunes aims to protect the ambience of its beach community roots and provide an elevated quality of living. The town does possess one gas station, though (Marathon Oil).

Ogden Dunes has several neighboring towns of similar origin, such as Beverly Shores, Dune Acres, and Michigan City. They are all beachy bedroom-communities, and are gated, disregarding Beverly Shores.
