Not sure quite how to do this (I ought to research it, but I'm pressed for time): but a recognition of the editors of the original Official Sinn Fein article which was merged into this one:

[edit] Factual changes and slight expansion

'party became known as Official Sinn Féin' - previous version had renamed, but I don't think the party was ever officially named 'Official Sinn Féin'.

Added explanation of 'official republican movement' largely to ease explanation of later splits etc.

Only further split in 1970s as far as I know was with INLA/IRSP. The IPLO was one of several later offshoots of the INLA. Dem Left split was in 1992, see below.

Added dates of both name changes.

Added info about Democratic Left although it may be more strictly relevant to WP article.

'Despite the numerous splits, and large migration to Workers Party, Official Sein Féin is still said to exist as a separate entity.' Definitely not. It officially changed its name to, first SFWP and then WP, without any splits. In the last couple of years some Workers Party members split off to form a new organisation based mainly around Newry called (confusingly) the Official Republican Movement. I didn't mention this because I wasn't sure it was important enough to mention.

Added factoid about Provos having initially been nicknamed 'pinheads' analogously with 'stickies'. Also added link to WP website. Palmiro 02:05, 15 Sep 2004 (UTC)

I replaced the references to Marxism with Stalinism, as it simply is more accurate.

[edit] SFWP article merged with this one

I've merged the SFWP article with this one. There was nothing useful on its page that wasn't already here, and since it only represents another name for the same organisation a merge seemed better. A merge with the Workers Party (Ireland) would also have been possible but I preferred this on balance simply because this page is, in my view, better and more informative. [edit] Merge with Workers Party (Ireland)

The article must be merged into Workers Party (Ireland) since that is the current name of the same party. Material should be shifted from this article to the other. --Soman 17:30, 1 October 2005 (UTC)

I agree fully. Official Sinn Féin and the Workers Party are identical. The party was simply renamed in 1977 from Sinn Féin to Sinn Féin the Workers Party and in 1982 finally to the Workers Party. In terms of leadership and membership there was no substantial difference and these name changes did not give rise to any splits or major departures.
I'm not sure about the technicalities of mergers etc., so I'd appreciate your help if you're in the know. --Damac 09:12, 7 December 2005 (UTC)
I also agree. The merge can be done manually, it is quite straightforward. Transfer relevant text from this article into the WP article, noting in the edit summary that you are merging the two articles, then edit this one into a redirect to the WP article. I would agree with merging this to Workers Party of Ireland.--Padraig (talk) 18:11, 2 January 2008 (UTC)
