Location of Oeversee within Schleswig-Flensburg district | |
Oeversee (Danish: Oversø) is a municipality in the district of Schleswig-Flensburg, in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. It is situated approx. 10 km south of Flensburg. The Oeversee municipality was merged with Sankelmark on 1 March 2008. The new municipality is still called Oeversee.
Oeversee is part of the Amt ("collective municipality") Oeversee. The seat of the Amt is located in Tarp, which is close to Idstedt and Stolk among other smaller towns in the area.
This area was the ground of many battles between the Germans and the Danes. The village of Oeversee (or to be more precise Sankelmark) wittnessed, for example, a battle of Austrian and Danish forces in the Second Schleswig War on February 6th 1864. There are still annual memorial services held for this event and the helpfulness of the citizens of Flensburg.
The Austrian city of Graz called an alley and a school after Oeversee in recognition of this event, because the participating Austrian troops were normally based at Graz. The other way round Oeversee named a public square after Graz (Grazer Platz).
