Old Dominion University (ODU) is a public research university located in Norfolk, Virginia, U.S. It was established in 1930 as the Norfolk Division of the College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia. ODU awarded its first bachelor's degrees in 1956 and became an independent institution in 1962. The campus police department was established in September of 1971.
|The Old Dominion University Police Department is a fully service accredited police force located at 4516 Monarch Way in Norfolk, Virginia, and is open 24 hours a day, providing around-the-clock protection and services to the University community. In May of 1993 The agency was one of the first campus police departments in Virginia to established concurrent jurisdiction with the City of Norfolk Police and began patrolling and providing police services off campus.
ODU Police Officers are on duty 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. The department is responsible for enforcing Federal, State and Local statutes and Old Dominion University regulations. The police officers are state-certified law enforcement officers who receive their training at the Hampton Roads Criminal Justice Training Academy.
The Police Department is responsible for law enforcement, security and emergency response at Old Dominion University, and its primary objective is to provide a safe and healthy environment that enhances the campus learning experience, and compliments the University's educational mission.
In addition, the Police Department is responsible for providing support services tailored to meet the needs of the Old Dominion University community. Some of these services are to:
Coordinate and administer the Student Escort Service Maintain a Lost and Found Department Assist campus motorists with minor vehicle problems Provide crime prevention services, lectures and seminars Test and inspect fire and intrusion alarm systems Numerous efforts are made to advise members of the university community on a timely basis regarding crime and crime-related problems. These efforts include:

Crime Alerts - If the situation warrants, special crime alerts can be printed and distributed either selectively or throughout the entire campus.
