A partial lunar eclipse took place on October 17, 2005, the second of two lunar eclipses in 2005. [1]

[edit] Relation to other lunar eclipses

This eclipse is the last of four Metonic cycle lunar eclipses on the same date, October 17-18, each separated by 19 years:

  1. October 18, 1948 [2] - partial (Saros series 116)
  2. October 18, 1967 [3] - total (Saros series 126)
  3. October 17, 1986 [4] - total (Saros series 136)
  4. October 17, 2005 - penumbral (Saros series 146)

The moon's path through the earth's shadow near its ascending node progresses northward through each sequential eclipse. The second and third are total eclipses.
