[edit] History
[edit] OVHS at its early years
Ocean View Hills School was built on 4919 Del Sol Boulevard in San Diego, California. At first, the school buildings were bungalows, as this was just a temporary establishment for future renovation. This trailer-filled school opened in the fall of 2001 and lasted for four and a half years. As students and staff populated the school, some joked of the school as "trailer trash". The school had a maximum capacity of about 580 students at the time.
[edit] The new school
The cost of building the new school was roughly $60,000,000 yet the school extends 20 acres and 5 additional acres for parking space. In this 20 acre space occupies 40 state-of-the-art classrooms, grass areas, and playgrounds. Instead of the measly 580 capacity, it had the capacity of about 1000 to 1200 students. The Grand Opening ceremony took place on February 9th, 2006, although classes began on January 6th. Several elected officials attended the ceremony, including California's Secretary of Education Alan Bersin. The new schools used money from the state ($21.2 million), funds raised by voter-approved bonds ($36.8 million), and home-owners' fees ($1.5 million).
[edit] Verizon Grant
James Earl Jones, a representative of Verizon Yellow Pages and also the famous voice actor for Darth Vader and King Mufasa visited OVHS to congratulate the school for its $25,000 cash grant from Verizon.
[edit] Educational Technology
Each classroom in OVHS is equipped with a variety of technologies. The San Ysidro School District believe that the technology they have installed in OVHS will improve student learning when effectively integrated into the curriculum.
[edit] SMART Boards
Every classroom has a SMART Board in front of the class, along with three other white boards. This SMART Board is essentially a touch-screen and enhanced version of overhead projectors. The SMART Board comes with a software program that allows students and teachers to easily draw, write, and erase on the board. Each SMART Board includes four "pens" of the colors black, red, blue, and green; there is also an "eraser" that comes with it. Touching the SMART Board is the same as clicking with a mouse on the area the user has touched. The SMART Board is hooked up to the teacher's computer and displays anything on there. That means the SMART Board can project videos, images, web sites, and more.
[edit] Wireless microphones
Every teacher has a wireless microphone with a clip. Teachers can clip these microphones on themselves so they can teach with a louder voice and free hands to write with.
[edit] Teacher's work stations
Each teacher has a work station in the corner of the classroom. This work station includes a wireless keyboard and mouse, document camera, DVD/VCR unit, scanner, five networked computers, and a high-speed printer.
[edit] Back computers
Every classroom has six computers. One is at the teacher's work-station and five are at the back for students to use. It has been this way since the old school was built.
[edit] School Dilemmas
[edit] Brown Field Airport
Brown Field, about 2 miles away from the OVHS community, was about to be turned into a cargo airport. With all the noise of constant airplane takeoffs, the students of OVHS would not be able to concentrate on schoolwork, and teachers would have to stop speaking every few minutes. A group of teachers took action and stopped the plan and was ready to face other problems and issues.
[edit] Sex offenders
There were state plans to release two sex offenders seven miles east of the OVHS community. OVHS leaders and the community combined rallied forth hundreds of people to put a halt to this plan.
