[edit] Plot summary

The story flashes between two periods of time - the 1940s, during the war and in a Nazi camp, where two pregnant women struggle to keep themselves and their unborn children alive, and the 1970s, where their children resolve unfinished business. The women's children are fighting to collect war survivor Rachel Spritzer's journal (which lists the names of the two hundred plus women that were murdered plus the descriptive way they died) and while trying to find each other as well. They do all this while wincing under the hand of a murderer. Will they survive the devastation and multiple defeats? Or will they die in the grip of him who hates? The 1970s portion of the story revolves around Stephen Friedman and his ever growing obsession. Stephen nearly gives up everything he owns to obtain an unspeakable treasure. Stephen's life becomes tightly entwined with a decades old mystery. And as he progresses towards his ultimate reward, he discovers what really matters in life. And ultimately finds out just exactly who he is. Ted Dekker's novel is a tautly rendered tale of imagination and obsession.
