Obra is located at [1]. It has an average elevation of 170 metres (557 feet).

As of 2001 India census[2], Obra had a population of 52,398. Males constitute 55% of the population and females 45%. Obra has an average literacy rate of 75%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 83%, and female literacy is 65%. In Obra, 11% of the population is under 6 years of age.
Obra stands by the side of the Son river, a tributary of the Ganges. The environment around nicely supports the Thermal and Hydel Power Station. The thermal station has 13 units with the total capacity of 1550 MW and the Hydel has a maximum capacity of 99 MW.
