Oberelsaß

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Oberelsaß (Upper Alsace, French: Haute-Alsace) was the name for a province ("Bezirk") in the southern part of Elsaß-Lothringen (Alsace-Lorraine) when it was part of the German Empire from 1871 to 1918.

It comprised the communities ("Kreise") of

  1. Altkirch within the Sundgau
  2. Colmar
  3. Gebweiler
  4. Mülhausen
  5. Rappoltsweiler
  6. Thann

The capital of the province was Colmar. The area corresponds roughly to the current département of Haut-Rhin.

The flag is of a yellow bar in a red field decorated on each side with three crowns. The union of this flag with that of Unterelsaß (Basse-Alsace) forms the flag of modern Alsace.
