The Obel Tower is a building currently under construction in Belfast, Northern Ireland.
Costing £40 million and measuring 80.5 metres (265 ft) in height, the tower, when completed, is set to dominate the Belfast skyline. It will overtake the current tallest skyscraper on the island of Ireland, Windsor House (80 m), also in Belfast. However a taller skyscraper called The U2 Tower (130 m or 180 m) which is to be built in Dublin was given planning permission in July 2006. Developed by the Laganside Corporation, the Obel Tower is located on Donegall Quay beside the Lagan Weir.
All the 182 apartments in the complex were reserved within 48 hours of the construction beginning.
As of mid-2007 construction work on the site had ceased. All construction equipment had been removed from the site.
Construction is now planned to recommence on 17th June 2008.
Planning permission was granted in January 2008 for an extra two floors to be added to the tower to cater for further demand in apartment space. The anticipated completion date is now summer 2010.
