Obed Ruzindana (1962- ) is a Rwandan businessperson who owned a small transport company. His father, Elie Murakaza, was the mayor of the Mugonero commune. Although of Hutu birth, in 1991 he married a Tutsi woman he had known since his youth.
Acting in concert with Clement Kayishima, Ruzindana helped coordinate the massacre of Tutsis in the Bisesero area. In one particular instance, they were among those who started a massive fire in front of a cave where hundreds of Tutsis had taken shelter. The smoke from the fire killed all but one of those Tutsis. In another, Tutsis hiding in a mine at Nyiramurego Hill were killed, and two young Tutsi girls were captured and brought to Ruzindana. While mocking her, he slowly mutilated and killed one, a 16-year old named Beatrice, and one of the militia killed the other while Ruzindana watched.
On 21 May 1999, he was sentenced to 25 years of prison for his role in the Rwandan genocide. He is serving his sentence at a prison in Mali.
