Oakton Community College is known as Oakton because it was initially located in former industrial buildings on the south side of Oakton Street between Lehigh and Caldwell in Morton Grove, from it's founding in 1969 until the Des Plaines campus opened in 1980. The current Skokie campus is at the former location of Niles East High School on Lincoln Avenue and is called the Ray Hartstein campus.
