" this wiki article has several ommissions. The oakland region (and part of belgrade & smithfeild) was originally called dearborn. while part of deerborn did split up prior to 1840, by 1843 state democrats, against the unanimous vote (130-0) of the people, decided to join dearborn with waterville for gerrymandering practices. the two villages of waterville never got along, by 1853 there were already talks of seperating, and by 1873 split apart where it became west waterville. by 1883, the town changed it's name to oakland.
