Oakleigh is a railway station in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, located in the suburb of Oakleigh, on the Pakenham and Cranbourne railway lines. Oakleigh is classed as a Premium Station, and is in Metcard Zones 1+2. The station is located between Haughton Road and Jones Street. Shops are located near the station. Nearby, Warrigal Road overpasses the rail line on the UP side of the station.

[edit] Facilities

The station consists of three platforms, 2 of them in an island layout. Platform 1 and 2 (island platform) contains a large red brick building with a waiting room and ticket office inside, while platform 3 contains a small red brick building and is not used normally unless there is a disruption on platform 1. A large Metcard machine is located at the entrance to platforms 1 and 2, which is able to dispense most ticketing options available and also accept notes and coins. A small Metcard machine is located at the entrance to platform 3. Both platforms can be accessed via Haughton Road and Johnson Street, via a subway underneath the station.

[edit] History

Oakleigh station originally opened on Monday, 8 October 1877. The station was once the eastern end of both the Outer Circle line and the Rosstown Railway.

Since 1989 Oakleigh Railway Station has featured over 40 plywood cut-outs on its walls and surrounding the station. These illustrate the life-stories of Oakleigh residents who were aged between 15 and 70 when the murals were unveiled in September 1989. They underwent restoration in 2002.[1]
