During the 1970s when many California schools were being demolished and rebuilt for earthquake safety, Tech's main building was declared too historic to tear down. Instead, it was gutted and rebuilt on the inside to preserve its historic exterior and the exterior had been repainted. The school has been a local landmark since 1986.

According to 1999's statistics, Oakland Tech enrolls 1,676 students. The school's approximate racial makeup is 62.6% African American or Black, 20.2% Asian/Pacific Islander, 11.2% Hispanic, and 5.6% White.

[edit] Fight songs

[edit] 1920s

A verse of the school's fight song, composed in the 1920s though today largely unknown:

Hail, all hail, to Technical we sing
Hail, all hail, our honest tributes bring
Our alma mater be our guide, and ever in our hearts abide
Hail, all hail, to Technical we sing.

[edit] 1950s

The Tech hymn as sung in the 1950s:

Oh Technical, to thee we raise our song of loyalty and praise.
To thee, our guide through high school days, we pledge our faith anew.
Thy name is written on our hearts in gold and purple hue.
Thy richest gifts, oh Technical, our friendships fine and true.

[edit] Late 1950s

The fight song from 1956 to 1958:

Tech High fights for victory
Tech High fights for fame
Ever share her loyalty, loyalty
Ever share her name.
Loyal sons of Technical
Go out and fight for the right
Keep your banner flying high
And FIGHT, FIGHT, FIGHT!
