O. Uplavici

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

O. Uplavici was the fictitious author of the article About Dysentery (1887). Since this paper was cited by numerous authors, the name persisted in the scientific literature for fifty years.[1] The real author of the article was Czech professor and physician Jaroslav Hlava (1855—1924).[1]

This mistake was caused by bad translation - the name of author was written in small characters, and the translator mistook O ÚPLAVICI (About dysentery in Czech) for the name of the author and PŘEDBĚŽNÁ ZPRÁVA (preliminary report) for About Dysentery.

The mistake was corrected in 1939 by American physician Clifford Dobell, writing about the history of this mistake in the article Dr. O. Uplavici (1887–1938).[2]
