NZR DXR refers to the New Zealand Railways Class DXR. Originally they were DX class locomotives but were rebuilt into the DXR series class. Currently there are two of them. 'R' stands for rebuilt. The running number series is in the 8000's. Eg. 8322. This also means that I'm a fan of New Zealand Rail, hence the 'NZR' prefix. When locomotives are upgraded they are usually given a new number series. Eg. The DF's were in the 6000's, but because they received a turbocharger upgrade and were consequently changed from their former selves, they were given number designations in the 7000's. They are now called DFT's ('T' for turbocharger)
