[edit] Incorrect Redirect

This page has been incorrectly redirected from Afonso I of Kongo and the king in question has been incorrectly named. His name was Mvemba a Nzinga or Mvemba Nzinga in modern Kikongo orthography. Older sources named him Mobemba aNzinga (as attested in 1545 in the chronicle of Damião de Goes). These spellings, along with those in the detailed accounts of Mateus Cardoso in his letter of 1624, reflect the pronounciation of Kikongo in the seventeenth century when the second vowel of class 1 nouns (Mu-) was still pronounced, and when the original Kikongo b had not yet differentiated into b and bh (nasalized). These changes which took place in the late seventeenth century are reflected in modern orthographies of Kikongo.

This entry needs to be renamed to reflect the correct form of the king's name.

I don't know enough about it to be an authority on anything. I just edited the page cause I took a history class and was forced to look up a ton of stuff about Mvemba. Many many of the sources I found wrote Nzinga Mbemba, and I assumed that "Mvemba a Nzinga" was some kinda latinized name ("Mvemba of Nzinga"). So go ahead and rewrite it or move it (make sure to take this discussion along with it), try to provide sources too. Fresheneesz 22:45, 26 December 2006 (UTC)
