Nyahururu is a town in Kenya, lying east of Nakuru. It is now part of the Laikipia District in Rift Valley Province. Nyahururu was formerly capital of the Nyandarua District, one of seven districts that make up Central Province in Kenya, but the headquarters was shifted to Ol Kalou. There has been calls to revert the situation [1]. The town has an urban population of 24,751 [2].
Nyahururu was founded by British colonists as Thompson Falls after the 70 metre high Thomson's Falls on the nearby Ewaso Nyiro River, which drains from the Aberdare mountain ranges. It grew around a railway from Gilgil opened in 1929 (now used only for goods).
Nyahururu is on the Junction of Nyeri-Rumuruti road and the Nyeri-Nakuru road. Nyahururu is also the highest town in Kenya making it a practical training ground for Kenya's top athletes. Nyahururu has lately become a hub for private schools( popularly called academies) because of availability of land. Such academies includes, Nyahururu elite, Riverbank, Busara Schools, Nyahururu Highway and many others. In addition, Egerton University's Laikipia campus is on the outskirts of Nyahururu town. With the quality education offered by the private schools, most children from this area have been successful in life.
The region around Nyahururu is mainly Agricultural. To the North OL Ngarua is famous for maize while Shamata to the south produces lots of potatoes. Lately, flower farming has brought new life to Nyahururu. Suera Flowers is a pioneer in this venture. The cool temperate weather, land availability and cheap labor may be some of the attractions to flower farming.
Nyahururu is also the home area of the famous safari rally champ Patrick Njiru
The Pan African School of Theology, an evangelical theological college founded in 2006, is located near the town.
