[edit] Plot

When a high-end department store’s security guard Jeff Zegers is shot down in a dressing room, Stella, Danny and Detective Angell find evidence including a dental mirror and burned off security tags that potentially tie a shoplifter to the crime. Unfortunately, the shoplifter fooled the security camera by wearing reflective clothing. However, after a bit of research the team finds that the shoplifter is a pro stealing thousands of dollars of merchandise a day. They head to Maddox where a saleswoman tells them that a blonde in sunglasses looked at the $25,000 purse that was stolen. Back at the lab, Adam confirms that the lifter tried on a ring and slipped it off with her tongue denoting that DNA might be on the ring. DNA shows that an Ava Brandt was taking Propranolol and her physical description matches the one Adam uncovered on the tape. Stella finds a reflective jacket, the expensive purse and shoplifting tools in Ava’s home. However, when they find Ava she says that although she lifts she didn’t kill anyone. When Danny looks in the lifter’s purse he finds a credit card reader which doesn’t match up with Ava’s profile; the prints on the card reader don’t either. Stella believes that someone placed the reader in her purse. She struggles to get more leads on the inside scammers that may be to blame.

Across town, Mac and flack find a male college student dead and slumped against a hedge in an elaborate maze. He has stab wounds on his neck, hands and arms. Hawkes finds no identification, but two Chelsea University exam receipts for an Eddie Williams and Thomas Brighton in the deceased Brian Miller’s pocket. Meanwhile, Hawkes finds blood on the tip of a knight statue’s sword. Mac plucks a piece of torn fabric from the hedge wall, a Mont Blanc fountain pen and multiple footprints. Lastly, Hawkes finds a bloodied jagged silver handle near the body. Back at the lab, Sid tells Mac that he suspects the victim was the participant of a fraternity ritual gone bad. He notes that the silver handle was from an absinthe spoon and that burn marks were on the victim’s shoulder. Adam confirms that the victim was drinking absinthe before his death insinuating that Brian could have stumbled into the sword statue. Hawkes notes that there is blood in the pen instead of ink. Serial numbers on the pen lead the team to Thomas Brighton. However, when Flack finds out that Brian bombed Thomas’s test he wonders if Thomas killed him out of revenge. Meanwhile, Hawkes interrogates Eddie who states that Brian took his tests for him so that he could make it through medical school. However, when Mac finds out that Brian was writing a secret article about an undercover fraternity.[2]
