[edit] Synopsis
Stella's life is in danger after her apartment is on fire; she must try to save everyone in the building. The team also has a mystery to solve after finding a dead body in Stella's apartment building. They find a burnt body in one of the apartments and believe the resident, who had a history of arson, was the arsonist. One of Stella's neighbors is later revealed to be a kidnapper. During this episode, Lindsay tells Danny that she has fallen in love with him, though he was earlier seen kissing Rikki Sandoval, and Rikki mentions that they had sex the night before. Ironically, Lindsay accuses Danny of being unable to share his grief with anyone.[1]
[edit] Plot
A women walks past a store, just as a message about a missing child, Bailey O'Dell, (Destiny Grace Whitlock) comes on. As she moves on, she gets her shoe caught in a grate, and stumbles through a glass window. At her crime scene, Mac tells Stella to go home and relax. A she wanders down her corridor, she stops to chat to her neighbor, who is having trouble keeping her niece and son occupied. Stella wakes up in the night, to find the building has set alight. The next day, with everyone out safely, Stella surveys her blackened flat, but finds some notes, saying "help me". And then it turns out that Someone didn't get out safely, namely a Sean Nolan, who's blackened body is laying next to the door in his apartment, Which is the starting point for the fire, and it turns out that Sean was once convicted for arson. But that doesn't explain why he couldn't get out of the burning room.
Danny is staggering around his apartment, semi-dressed, when Lindsay calls asking if he wants to go out for lunch. He fobs her off and turns around to find Rikki Sandoval (Jacqueline Piñol) coming into the room, dressed his shirt. She say that last night was just sex, and that she's taking advantage of how guilty Danny is about Reuben's death. Danny says he doesn't care, and they kiss.
Back at the labs, Sid tell Hawks and Lindsay that not only did Sean die before the fire, it isn't the body of Sean Nolan. It's a women, who died before the fire was started. Stella also gets Adam analyzing the notes she found. Hawks and Danny manage to get TOD from the color of Sean's goldfish. The women has been dead for 3-5 days, but Sean says he's been in Boston for the past week. The women, died of a ruptured spleen cause by a car crash a few days earlier, so it was an accident. Not only that, but the fire didn't start in Sean Nolan's apartment, it started in Bonnie Dillard's (Kimberly Quinn) apartment, and was sucked through the heating vents in search of oxygen, and Nolan's apartment had an open window. But the prints on the lighter that started the fire say that Bailey O'Dell started the fire.
While calling schools about Bonnie's son, Jason, (Austin Reed Whitlock) Lindsay confronts Danny about him backing off from her. After finding Bonnie's abandoned van, Stella tells Mac that Jason hasn't been in school for over a week. But he was always a troubled child, and Stella mentions a time he bored a hole through the wall separating the apartments. And Bonnie called her insurance company about a check for the damage done to her apartment. Mac says call the company to tell Bonnie she can pick the check up in an hour. They catch her, but the kids aren't with her and she's not saying anything, except that Bailey O'Dell is happier where she is now, that with her single mother, and that when Bonnie was pregnant, they took her child from her because she was a single mother. Lindsay gives Stella and Danny a possible lead: a rooftop greenhouse, as Stella leaves, Danny tells Lindsay that they need to talk, Adam tells Stella that the notes were pushed through her wall. Through the hole that Jason made. He wrote those notes saying "help me".
They raid the rooftop greenhouse, and find both Bailey O'Dell and Jason Dillard. Bailey is returned to her parents and Stella talks to "Jason" who says his real name is Austin Tanner, and he helped Bailey light the fire, because it would involve the police. Later, Mac and Megan Tanner (Heidi Schooler), Austin's real mother, share an emotional & heart-wrenching moment as Mac lets her know her son may be confused by his kidnapping, and being held captive for 4 years... He tells her she must be patient. She emotionally realizes what's ahead for them both, but is happy that he has been found. Later, Stella walks past a store, with a TV showing Austins tearful reunion with his mother. She smiles faintly as she knows she helped get them back together...
[edit] Quotes
- Hawkes: (to Danny) It's murder, it doesn't have to make sense.
- Rikki: Last night was just sex. Before my son died, you were just a guy that I smiled at in the hallway and joked with at the mailboxes. What are we doing?
- Danny: (cupping her face in his hands): Making each other feel better because Reuben's gone. There's nothing wrong with that. (kisses Rikki).
- Rikki: Danny... One day you're gonna wake up and realize that Ruben's death wasn't your fault. Yes he was with you when he was shot but it was an accident. And me, can't you see, I'm just taking advantage of the guilt you feel so that I don't have to be alone.
- Danny: I don't care. I don't care cause I just want this hurt to go away. Don't you?
(Rikki nods her head, Danny kisses her again)
- Rikki: I really should go...
- Danny: Ok, but this is my shirt and I'm gonna need my shirt back, okay. Before you go...
(Danny starts to unbutton the shirt and kisses her again, Rikki gives in)
- Danny: I'm gonna get some coffee, you want some coffee?
- Lindsay: No, thanks.
- Danny: How long are you gonna stay mad at me, Linds?
- Lindsay: Oh, is that what this is? Me mad at you?
- Danny: Is it still about missing your birthday? (pause) Look, I didn't want to go to lunch yesterday. Why go you gotta make a big deal out of it?
- Lindsay: Do me a favor Danny, don't reduce me to some shallow clingy girlfriend that's starting to suffocate you, ok? That's not what this is about! Ever since Ruben Sandoval died, I feel like I've lost my best friend. And don't mistake this for jealousy ok, I know what it's like to lose someone you care about, to see them one day and not see them the next and to know you'll never see them again. I would never expect you not to grieve, but clearly you've just decided to do it all on your own. (pause) Ok, I get it (standing up to leave), my mistake for thinking that you might need somebody to lean on. And you know, for the record, I'm not mad at you, I'm mad at myself because I've fallen in love with you and I have to figure out how to let that go. (Lindsay leaves the room)
- (After Stella leaves)
- Danny: (Looks at Lindsay) Lindsay. (Pauses and Lindsay looks at him) I'm sorry. We should... We should talk.
