[edit] Plot
The episode opens with New York in the midst of Fleet Week. The body of a marine, Corporal Trevor Price, is discovered in Central Park. Although Price was stabbed once in the chest, his uniform is in parade-ground condition and he did not appear to have defended himself. As his body was found off the paths and roads, the CSIs surmise that Price was visiting New York and was ambushed and killed elsewhere, before being dragged to where he was found
Back at the morgue, Sid confirms the cause of death as a stab wound. Hammerback finds numerous partially-healed bruises on the body. Mac pays a visit to the commanding officer of Price's platoon; the interview reveals that the bruising occurred while Price trained against his peers in the "bull-ring", a style of combat training. The C.O. confirms that Price separated left the platoon to take care of a personal matter, and was otherwise an exemplary soldier.
Meanwhile in the city, Stella, Hawkes, and Lindsay investigate a torched car and the victim inside, who was charred beyond recognition. Hammerback initially identifies the victim as female and that the cause of death was blunt-force trauma - several of her ribs and an ulna were broken and there was fracturing along her zygomatic arch; he could not determine if she was sexually assaulted. Hawkes starts to make a crude sketch of the face, based on the shape of the skull. At the same time, Stella and Lindsay are analyzing the car - Lindsay lifts an unusual-looking print off one of the car windows. The print turns out to be an ear; Lindsay and Stella believe that it belongs to the killer because it does not fit the victim proportionally.
The CSIs find out that the owner of the car – a Mr. Wright – reported that he witnessed his car being stolen after the murder took place. Hawkes digitally reconstructs the face of the victim and receives a shock – the victim is Aiden Burn, a former CSI who was fired for tampering with evidence. Her former colleagues are gathered and informed of her death.
When the CSIs interrogate Wright, they discover that he lied about the timeline of the car theft in an attempt to hide the fact that he was cheating on his wife with a male prostitute. The evidence confirms his story; Wright's ear does not match the print lifted from the car. Reminiscing about the last time she saw Aiden, Stella reveals that Aiden was last working on her private investigator's license. A visit to Aiden's apartment reveals that she had been shadowing D.J. Pratt, a serial rapist that had previously eluded arrest due to lack of evidence. Mac and Stella confront Pratt, who immediately cries harassment and threatens them with legal action.
Meanwhile, Danny is still investigating Corporal Price’s murder, much to his displeasure; he would rather be investigating Aiden’s case. He finds a Lima bean on Price’s body that leads him to a street hustler named Rondo, who uses Lima beans as a mark in his game. After a bit of pressure, Rondo concedes that he did meet Price, who subsequently lost Rondo's game and kept the Lima bean as a souvenir. When questioned about a cut on his cheek, Rondo responds that Price was laissez-faire about losing while others were not. Nevertheless, Danny takes a DNA sample from him.
Traces of brass cleaner and beer are found on Price, which the lab identifies as artificial flavouring from a specialty beer, leads the CSIs to a bar near the crime scene. The first bartender Flack interviews, Alexandria, says that she was not working on the night in question. A second bartender admits to seeing Price and that Price was looking for someone named Ellie, who supposedly worked there; the bartender notes that he had never heard the name before.
Still unhappy about his assignment, Danny examines Corporal Price’s clothes. The drop of blood found on the sleeve of Price's uniform tests positive for mucus, which indicates that it came from a bleeding nose. While contemplating how the drop of blood got on the uniform, Mac demonstrates on Danny how a Marine would have defended against a knife attack, and reasons that a person highly trained in hand-to-hand combat would not sustain defensive wounds, as was the case for Corporal Price. The resulting injuries, Mac and Danny deduce, are severe enough to require medical attention and are distinct enough such that searching recent hospital admittances should lead them to the attacker. The defensive counter would have incapacitated the attacker, so Price must have been killed by a second attacker.
While searching Wright’s car, Stella and Lindsay find that the car was broken into and started with a tool speckled with paint; Pratt had been painting an apartment when Mac and Stella confronted him earlier. The paint sample is later proven to be too common to warrant an arrest. An examination of Aiden's covert photographs of Pratt reveals that he knew of her investigation; he set a trap and Aiden was lured into it. Aiden became familiar with Pratt's modus operandi and tracked his whereabouts; she deduced Pratt's next potential victim and moved into the same apartment. Pratt shows up at the apartment to do a paint job (and rape his victim as per his M.O.) only Aiden would be there to catch him. Unfortunately this girl, the apartment and the paint job were all a ploy to lure Aiden into a false sense of security. Pratt stole Wright's car, forced Aiden into it and beat her to death before torching it. Hawkes enters the scene with new evidence - a bite mark on the armrest of the car.
At a local hospital, Flack and Danny find a perfect match to the injuries; the casualty was dropped off at the hospital by his wife, who is sitting outside his hospital room; she has visibly been beaten by her husband and clearly suffers from battered spouse syndrome. Danny breaks the events of Price's murder down for her: the husband had one too many drinks on the evening of the murder and started to beat his wife just as Price happened upon them, Price neutralized the husband with a sleeper hold and was subsequently knifed by the wife, who thought Price had killed her husband.
Collating all their evidence, Mac and Stella are able to arrest Pratt for the stolen car. Pratt is smug at first and threatens legal action, but Mac and Stella covered their bases and had him photographed at Central Booking. His ear is a perfect match to the print, which puts him in the car, and a bite mark on his arm matches the bite mark on the armrest, which puts Aiden in the car with him; Mac knew to look for a bite mark on Pratt's arm when he found out about the armrest because it alluded to a case Aiden had worked as a young investigator. Stella invites Mac out for a drink but he wants to take care of something first. Mac visits the bar and interviews Alexandria. It turns out that "Ellie" is the nickname given to her by her fiancė, who was killed in action overseas; Price knew him and had separated from the rest of his squad to return the watch.
The episode closes with the team meeting at Sullivan's, their favourite bar. Now at peace, having caught her killer, they toast to the life of Aiden Burn.
[edit] Trivia
Trivia sections are discouraged under Wikipedia guidelines. The article could be improved by integrating relevant items and removing inappropriate ones. |
- Facial reconstruction is one of Aiden's specialties, Hawkes reconstructs Aiden's face using techniques that are very similar to hers ("American Dreamers"; episode 3 of season 1).
- During the festivities at the beginning of the episode, there is a sign that says there will be a demonstration by the Marines. The song in the background is The Army Goes Rolling Along, which is the official song of the Army. The appropriate song should have been the Marines' Hymn [1].
- It is indicated that Price, the Marine, was killed 11 hours before its discovery, placing time of death at around midnight. Danny, tracing the path of the victim, states that Price played Rondo's game around 9:00 pm and "was found dead in Central Park at midnight." The body was found the next day, thus he should have said that Price died around midnight[1]
