NWA UK Central Counties Championship

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The NWA UK Central Counties Championship is an NWA commissioned title used in Midlands Pro Wrestling as its primary title alongside the Phoenix City Championship.

The Central Counties belt replaced the old Mat Masters Championship and was announced by NWA representative Majik.

Notable champions include Chris Charizma, who held the title for over a year; Conscience, who ended Charizma's reign and became a highly dominant champion; and mat veteran Keith Myatt. The current title holder at time of writing is Jay Icon.

The Central Counties Championship is not a recognised NWA title, as the central counties of the UK are covered by the NWA-UK Heavyweight and Junior Heavyweight titles.

The Central Counties Championship replaced the MPW Mat Master Championship, and was introduced by Majik at the AT7 Center in Coventry in May 2004.

The MPW-MMC had been successfully defended by Psycho Steve against Jet Black, when Majik entered the ring accompanied by Thor Enforcement. With the MPW-MMC trophy destroyed, Majik announced the replacement in the Central Counties Championship, and pit Psycho Steve immediately into another match against Exodus (a wrestler noted for his unorthodox techniques, and acrobatic ability despite being 6'6" in height).

Whilst strictly an MPW title, the Central Counties Championship has been defended across various British promotions that operate in the central counties (Leicester Pro Wrestling, for example).

With the closure of MPW in 2006, champion Keith Myatt brought the Central Counties Championship to MPWs former sister company Leicester Pro Wrestling, along with the Phoenix City Championship, where it currently resides.
