NWA Texas Heavyweight Championship

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The NWA Texas Heavyweight Championship is a title that has existed since the 1930s and has had several different names. It was the Texas Heavyweight Championship from the 1930s until the formation of the National Wrestling Alliance in the late 1940s. It was then billed as the NWA Texas Heavyweight Championship until 1986.

In 1986, WCCW withdrew from the NWA and changed their name to "World Class Wrestling Association", while still promoting under the WCCW banner. The title became the WCWA Texas Heavyweight Championship at this time. In 1991, the title became the USWA Texas Heavyweight Championship in the United States Wrestling Association when WCCW merged into the USWA.

It renamed the WCWA Texas Heavyweight Championship in 1993 (after USWA and WCWA split) and became the GWF Texas Heavyweight Championship in the Global Wrestling Federation in 1994. It reverted back to the WCCW Texas Title in 1997 and was briefly the CWA Texas Heavyweight Championship in 1997. It then reverted back to its original name when awarded to NWA Southwest, where it is still used today[1].
