"#1 Crush" was a 1995 track from alternative rock band Garbage, which was released internationally on the b-side to Garbage's debut release "Vow", and in the United Kingdom on the b-side to second single "Subhuman".[1]
In 1996, the track was remixed by Nellee Hooper and Marius de Vries for the soundtrack to Baz Luhrman's modernised William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet movie adaptation. The remix of "#1 Crush" peaked at #1 on Billboard's Hot Modern Rock Tracks, where it stayed for four weeks, and was nominated for Best Song From a Movie at the 1997 MTV Movie Awards.
"#1 Crush" became the theme tune to the UK 2004 TV series Hex, and in 2007, its remix was remastered and included on Garbage's greatest hits album Absolute Garbage.[2]

[edit] Song profile
"#1 Crush" was written and recorded between March, 1994 and May, 1995 during sessions between band members Duke Erikson, Shirley Manson, Steve Marker and Butch Vig in either Marker's basement recording studio or at their own Smart Studios in Wisconsin university town Madison.[3]
Shirley Manson (speaking about "#1 Crush"): "All real love is a form of obsession, if you love someone more than anything else, that degree of exclusivity requires an abnormal amount of passion and care. And that can be positive. It's just that keeping it short of unhealthy, short of violence, really requires a bit of moderation. You can't let something like that take over all of your thought processes."
In 1996, Nellee Hooper remixed "#1 Crush" for inclusion on the Romeo + Juliet soundtrack. Hooper added a distorted vocal sample from Madonna's 1994 single "Bedtime Story".
[edit] Release
"#1 Crush" was released in 1995 internationally on the b-side to Garbage's debut release "Vow", and in the United Kingdom on the b-side to second single "Subhuman".[1] It later appeared as a Japan bonus track on the band's debut album Garbage.
The soundtrack to Romeo & Juliet was released on October 29, 1996. Despite no lead single being officially released for the album's promotion, alternative radio began airing tracks from the album. On November 30, "#1 Crush" debuted on the Hot Modern Rock Tracks and the Hot 100 Airplay, climbing for five weeks before peaking at #1 and #29 respectively.[4] "#1 Crush" stayed at the top of the Hot Modern Rock Tracks chart for four weeks. Despite not featuring on the Garbage, and having no promotional video (although filming one at the start of 1997 was considered[5]) the success of the song continued to maintain Garbage's U.S. sales.
- "#1 Crush" is performed as a drag show in the 2003 movie Soldier's Girl.
