Numaligarh Refinery Township is a census town in Golaghat district in the Indian state of Assam.
As of 2001 India census[1], Numaligarh Refinery Township had a population of 1500. Males constitute 52% of the population and females 48%. Numaligarh Refinery Township has an average literacy rate of 100%, and female literacy is 100%. In Numaligarh Refinery Township, 16% of the population is under 6 years of age.
Numaligarh Refinery Limited is vowed to maintaining ecological balance along with its main mission. As a commitment towards ecology, Numaligarh Refinery has initiated an eco-friendly venture and has establish a Butterfly ecosystem in the vicinity of its township.
Numaligarh Refinery Limited known as "Assam Accord Refinery" is situated amidst beautiful and picturesque surroundings of Numaligarh in Assam, with the world famous Kaziranga National Park in its neighbourhood. The Refinery owes it's existence to the commitment made by Government off India in the historic "Assam Accord", signed on 15th August 1985 and was conceived as a vehicle for speedy economic development of the region.
With its concern, commitment and contribution to socio-economic development of the state combined with a track record of continuous growth, NRL has been conferred the status of a Mini Ratna PSU.
The Butterfly valley is spread over 15 acres land surrounded by small hillocks, adjacent to the enchanting Deopahar hills, the area is saturated with the plantation of about 60,000 plants endemic to North East India. An ecological hot spot, the north-east is already a natural home to a dozen of endangered butterfly species, with still waiting to a vast area of this untamed land to be tapped. Butterfly Valley, will offer the unique opportunity to explore the verdant beauty of northeast with its rich flora and fauna.
NRL has been pursuing programme towards environment protection by adopting safe and eco-friendly technologies, sound design and engineering practices. To improve upon the environment system objectives are set and performance of the system is reviewed in line with changing needs. NRL has a well defined Environment Management System (EMS) under ISO 14001, OSHAS 18001 and ISRS Protocols. A dedicated environment management cell is continuously working for improvement, monitoring, safeguarding and reporting of environment activities of the refinery, besides the environment issues being reported, discussed and reviiewed in the highest management level.
In recognition of its efforts for environment management, NRL has been awarded the Greentech Environment Excellence Award consecutively for the year 2002-03 and 2003-04.
