[edit] License tagging for Image:Max Kenworthy.jpg
Thanks for uploading Image:Max Kenworthy.jpg. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.
For more information on using images, see the following pages:
This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. If you need help on selecting a tag to use, or in adding the tag to the image description, feel free to post a message at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 01:06, 8 July 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Image copyright problem with Image:Max_Kenworthy.jpg
Thank you for uploading Image:Max_Kenworthy.jpg. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the image. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.
If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks again for your cooperation. BigrTex 00:04, 3 June 2007 (UTC)
- Did Max Kenworthy give permission just to have this used on Wikipedia? Or did he give permission for anyone to use it for any reason, including for profit? – Quadell (talk) (random) 15:24, 11 June 2007 (UTC)

- Hello. I'm sorry this has been a frustrating process for you. Let me try to explain.
- Wikipedia is a free content encyclopedia, which means we can only use freely licensed images (except under very limited exceptions). If your friend allows Wikipedia to use the image, but still would forbid any other webpage from using the image, then Wikipedia can't use the image. We only use images that any webpage could freely use, without having to ask the copyright-holder for permission. So if your friend (or whoever holds the copyright to the photo -- presumably the photographer) is willing to license the photograph under a free license (such as the GFDL or Creative Commons cc-by license), then we can use it! But so can any other website. And if the copyright holder won't release it under a free license, then we can't use it.
- If you have any questions, just ask me. I'm here to help. – Quadell (talk) (random) 22:52, 11 June 2007 (UTC)
