Nueva Helvecia ("New Helvetia") is a city located in the southeastern part of Colonia del Sacramento department, Uruguay. Its population, as of 2004, was 12,000.
The date of its foundation is considered to be 24 April 1862, when a large number of immigrants, mostly from Switzerland, but with a significant number from Austria, Germany and France, settled in the area. Nowadays, New Helvetia is famous for its milk production and its very well-known cheese.
