These ships were requested in 1950, and were built by Vickers Armstrongs Barrow-in-Furness shipyards between 1951 and 1954
Nueva Esparta is Spanish language for New Sparta and the name of the largest island in Venezuela, after the independence war their people was baptized by his and her bravery as New Sparta.

[edit] Nueva Esparta Class Destroyer History
This kind of vessel was designed by Vickers Armstrong shipyards in 50's for Venezuela naval Forces, currently is classified as a derivative of the Batch 3 Battle class destroyer , according several information released by INRO and several independent researches in 2006, were part of a fleet that includes a 25.000 ton Carrier and a Tiger class cruiser, but includes several differences in weapons systems.

The fleet arrangement for 30/04/1949 covers:
- 1 (25000 to) Aircraft carrier (Conceptual Engineering)
- 1 (8000 ton) Cruiser (Detailed Engineering)
- 3 Nueva Esparta Class Destroyers (Built)
- 6 Almirante Clemente Class Destroyers (Built)
- 4 Submarines (1 used from of US Navy)
- 12 patrol boat (Detailed Engineering)
- 2 Mine sweepers (Basic Engineering)
- 1 Marine Assault ships (Built)
The names assigned to these ships were associated to strategical states of Venezuela:
- D-11 Nueva Esparta to the ship class accordding to referd bravery and loyalty.
- D-21 Zulia in order to remember Battle of Lake Maracaibo in Venezuelan War of Independence and for huge contribution of this state.
- D-31 Aragua because this is the military heart of Venezuela and as homege to the La Victoria battle rembembered as the Youth Day
