Nude with Violin
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Nude with Violin is a 1950s play by British actor and playwright Noel Coward. The play is set in Paris in 1954, and the story centers on the aftermath of the death of a famous painter, Paul Sorodin. His output is found to be fraudulent, but blackmail enhances the reputation and value of his works.
The original production, opening in 1956 at the Globe Theatre starred Coward, who was replaced in the role by John Gielgud, and Zena Dare.
The production transferred to the Belasco Theatre on Broadway in November 1957, starring the author, Morris Carnovsky, Joyce Carey and Luba Malina. The production won the 1958 Tony Award for Best Scenic Design. The production then enjoyed a national tour.
This light comedy of manners is Coward's satire on "Modern Art" (and the art world in general) and the value placed on art.
