rfa thanks

NSLE, I want to personally thank you for your support (initially), and then constructive criticism on my RFA. I was really excited when I first saw your support. I've seen your voting patterns at RFA, and I consider you to be a tough and stringent voter, and a good judge of character. When I saw you had withdrawn your support, it made me reconsider whether I was ready to be an admin. By the time it took me to decide that I probably wasn't, it was pretty clear that I wasn't going to gain consensus anyway. This has been a great learning experience for me. I hope that I'll gain your support in the next couple of months. Holler at me if you need anything. SWATJester Ready Aim Fire! 01:09, 29 April 2006 (UTC)

Image problem

Hey, following that recent vote on 2005AHS, I am working through the minor storm articles improving them. However on Hurricane Philippe (2005) I have encountered a strange problem. I attempted to use the storm pic from the list article in the infobox, but the attempt got a weird error code. [1] Do you know what to do about this?--Nilfanion 01:25, 29 April 2006 (UTC)

Would it be possible that you move User:Hurricanehink/Cyclone Mala to Cyclone Mala? The latter is currently a redirect, and I would like to move the article I created there. Hurricanehink 00:14, 30 April 2006 (UTC)

General Eisenhower is pretending to be an admin again. Look at the top-right corner of his page. He has that little admin logo: the wikipedia logo with the mop at the bottom. --GeorgeMoneyTalk  Contribs 18:02, 30 April 2006 (UTC)

A landslide victory for The JPS (aka RFA thanks)

Hey, NSLE, thank you so much for your vote and comments in my RfA, which passed with an overwhelming consensus of 95/2/2. I was very surprised and flattered that the community has entrusted me with these lovely new toys. I ripped open the box and started playing with them as soon as I got them, and I've already had the pleasure of deleting random nonsense/attacks/copyvios tonight.
If I ever do anything wrong, or can help in some way, please feel free to drop me a line on my talk page, and I will do my best to correct my mistake, or whatever...
Now, to that bottle of wine waiting for me...

The 1997 Hurricane season

Since you are in the Tropical Cyclones Wikiproject I hope you can help me to improve the 1997 Atlantic hurricane season article to FA. I've seen it is a good article, but I have noticed that it is being ignored. Maybe some people never care about these hurricanes, but I live in an area that suffers struggles from these hurricanes. Please help; I've been asking someone to help me with this for two months and a half, and I've not got reponse yet. juan andrés 00:24, 5 May 2006 (UTC)

Esperanza Newsletter, Issue #3

The Administrator Coaching program is a program aimed at preparing Wikipedians for Adminship or helping them understand the intricacies of Wikipedia better. Recently, changes have been made to the requirements of coachees. Please review them before requesting this service.
This would be something like the Welcoming Committee, but for people who have figured out the basics of editing articles; they're not newcomers any more, but they might want some help in learning new roles. Some might like suggestions about how to learn vandal patrol, or mentoring on taking an article to featured status, or guidance with a proposal they plan to make at the Village Pump, for example. In this way, Esperanza would help keep hope alive for Wikipedia because we would always be grooming the next generation of admins.
Stressbusters
The Stressbusters are a subset of Esperanza aiming to investigate the causes of stress. New eyes on the situation are always welcome!
Note from the editor
As always, MiszaBot handled this delivery. Thank you! Also, congratulations go to Pschemp, Titoxd and Freakofnurture for being elected in the last elections! An Esperanzial May to all of the readership!
  1. Posting logs of the Esperanza IRC channel are explicitly banned anywhere. Violation of this rule results in deletion and a ban from the channel.
  2. A disclaimer is going to be added to the Esperanza main page. We are humans and, as such, are imperfect.
  3. Various revisions have been made to the Code of Conduct. Please see them, as the proposal is ready to be ratified by the community and enacted. All members will members to have to re-confirm their membership after accepting the Code of Conduct.
  4. Referendums are to be held on whether terms of AC members should be lengthened and whether we should abolish votes full stop.

Lar as admin

I see you opposed lar's RfA. It's unfortunate it succeeded. After several run-ins with him online, and knowing some of the story behind his run-ins with others, I can only conclude that he is *NOT* the kind of person who works well with others in an admin role. I have known him for several years and I, like most people he meets, had a positive view of him after our first meeting (yes we have met IRL). But since then I have come to realise his standard modus operandi is to rein in his combatative nature until he has enough support to gain a position of power. Every admin role he has been actively involved in (in the LEGO community where I know him from) he has done exactly that, and ended up being so unworkable that he's been kicked out (if possible) or basically forced to resign.

Anyway, I guess wikipedia will find out all about that in due course. I don't think he'll do much damage, but I have no doubt he will end up alienating a lot of people, both admins and not. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 58.178.148.25 (talkcontribs)

I see you've noticed too..

...about a certain editors bizarre contributions. You were quick to rv his/her random wiki-linking. This user has been popping up in my watchlist more and more lately. I've spoken to a another editor about these "odd" additions but they didn't see anything peculiar about it. As I said to them..."it doesn't stink, but it certainly has an odour". I've been quietly following behind and trying to clean up when I have time. Perhaps if you notice it happening you might let me know. Cheers and take care! Anger22 01:49, 12 May 2006 (UTC)

his modus operandi has switched to "slightly" altering image sizes(he has a thing for 240px). If his goes into "serial wiki-link" mode I'll roll it back with VandalProof. I doubt it'll make a difference. He's received several warnings already. Cheers! Anger22 01:59, 12 May 2006 (UTC)
Follow up...He's returned the past few nights with the same ridiculous wiki-linking and image altering. I did as you suggested and rolled him back with a couple of vandal warnings but to no avail. He just keeps returning to the same pages and adding his useless fluff. Any ideas/tips you can pass along? Cheers and take care! Anger22 00:31, 14 May 2006 (UTC)
Good show!. I tend to focus more on the "malicious/racial slur/blanking" sort of vandal. Useless wiki-linking isn't on par with those types of actions. But still...that guy was really starting to get on my nerves. I have about 100 countries on my watchlist. Should a new user suddenly appear with habits similar to ol' Reg...I'll know not be be so slow in keeping up with their actions. This guy had over 550 edits. I doubt even 50 of them were of any value. Cheers! Anger22 01:01, 14 May 2006 (UTC)

Please try to restrain yourself from posting nasty things about me on trollboards. If you have a personal problem with me, you're welcome to talk to me about it. Ageism is not a "personal attack" by the way. Typhoon Chanchu

I reverted your move of Typhoon Chanchu because it is general practice, in cases for the same name being used in the same basin but at different intensities, to use the higher intensity (Typhoon, Cyclone, or Hurricane depending on the basin). In general, tropical storm is used for the same name in basins where the prefixes (that is, Typhoon, Hurricane, or Cyclone) are not the same. For example, consider the disambiguation pages on Hurricane Madeline, Hurricane Joyce, Tropical Storm Greg, and Typhoon Bolaven. Madeline is used only in the East Pacific, so it is "Hurricane"; Joyce was used in both the east Pacific and Atlantic, so the disambiguation page is "Hurricane"; Greg was used in the west Pacific and east Pacific, so "Tropical Storm" is used to avoid having to decide whether to use "Typhoon" or "Hurricane"; Bolaven is only in the western Pacific, so it is called "Typhoon". In the case you mentioned in your edit summary, the reason the Katrina disambiguation page is at that location is because it was used in the southern hemisphere (the term "Cyclone" is used there).

I hope this clears up any confusion about disambiguation page naming. Miss Madeline | Talk to Madeline 17:25, 15 May 2006 (UTC)

Re: NSLE

You know, I had a feeling that it was you in the back of my mind. I looked at your contributions and saw an edit to a Singapore article, and it clicked: "Is that NSLE, or am I just imagining it?"

Anyway, a lot of tropics-people at another forum "celebrated" the ringing in of the EPAC season at 15/0000 UTC, and in a server on IRC the same.

I suppose a better question would be: What time does the NHC consider the EPAC season to have begun? 15/0000 UTC? 15/0000 ET? 15/0000 PT? :) -- RattleMan 21:52, 15 May 2006 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Requests for arbitration/KDRGibby

KDRGibby returned to Wikipedia last week and engaged in edit warring and personal attacks. His behavior has become grossly uncivil. Because his behavior seems to be getting worse, not better, I am considering invoking his General Probation:

KDRGibby is placed on general probation. Any three administrators, in the exercise of their judgement for reasonable cause, may ban him from Wikipedia if his general pattern of activity is unacceptably disruptive.

I'd like to hear your opinion on this. Would you support a move to ban him at this stage? --Tony Sidaway 02:32, 16 May 2006 (UTC)

I've opened a discussion on this on WP:AN. I'd like to see if there are reasonable objections before pressing ahead. --Tony Sidaway 14:40, 16 May 2006 (UTC)

Template:HurricaneWarning

I noticed you reverted my removal of Residents of areas affected by {{{1}}} are advised to seek advice and information from local authorities through television and radio, and official weather forecast websites (links below). From the TfD, I inferred that the main concern of other editors was that users understand that Wikipedia makes no guarantees vis-à-vis the accuracy of information disseminated, such that users should not depend on Wikipedia for current and accurate information or take action in view of Wikipedia's info. I don't think, though, that there was a consensus for our continuing to advise users as to what specifically they ought to do, only what they ought not to do. I understand the reasons for which keep was supported, but I don't think the TfD can reasonably be interpreted as supporting the position that we ought to counsel users as to how they ought to make their decisions with respect to hurricanes/cyclones in their areas. I'm going to revert to my revision, but I'll not revert you if you should elect to return the template to the erstwhile advisory fashion; I'll likely raise the issue on the template's talk page then, but I thought I should write you first inasmuch as template talk pages aren't often watched by users. Hey

I know we've had a couple of minor disagreements, but maybe this will clear up any thought of them;

FYI

Hi there. Maybe this is really nothing... but I'm not certain so I figure I would ask. I happened to notice a past conversation you had with this user regarding a bunch of "special" pages in his User space. It seems that s/he just moved them to a new spot within Wikipedia. Doesn't seem like this would be allowed either... although I am not an expert on this so I wanted to have someone with more knowledge than I take a look. The new pages don't seem to be related to any other pages. Am I putting my nose where it doesn't belong? -- eo 20:39, 21 May 2006 (UTC)

Resid, again

Hello NSLE, I thought you might want to be aware of this RFCU filed by User:Azate. Thanks. Netscott 10:33, 23 May 2006 (UTC)

You know, Resid Gulerdem should just be reblocked and his case again posted to the noticeboard. It seems everything he's connected to results in the community's patience being tried. Not only has he tried the community's patience here on English Wikipedia but independently he's tried the community's patience over on the Turkish Wikipedia. Regardless of whether or not he indeed again engaged in sockpuppetry he definitely engaged in that other kind of puppetry that starts with meat. The time for continued patience with his disuptive editing on Wikipedia is over (again). The tone he's taking on his RFCU in terms of referring to a fellow Turk's (Azate) editing as being vandalism is just indicative of his continued defiance. User:Cyde was right to perma-block him and the other puppets (whichever kind they are) and let other more constructive editors get on with the business of writing this great encyclopedia. Please re-block Resid and post doing so on the admin's noticeboard. Netscott 15:06, 24 May 2006 (UTC)

You'll Never Walk Alone/Anti-Everton vandalism elsewhere

I didn't bother putting in any comments for the first 10 fixes I did to revert various bit of mischief but it was getting beyond a joke.

When it comes to the You'll Never Walk Alone issue the user is simply reverting to his bias account. It isn't accurate to just throw Celtic in along with the other teams as they have been singing the song for basically the same amount of time as liverpool.

I simply ask that you provide compelling evidence in support of your position - that Celtic supporters have invariably sung the same song from 1963 to the present day - yet you have failed to do so, instead repeating the tired mantra that I am in some way biased. It simply won't do. Ste B 02:04, 25 May 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for the uplifting remarks. It's simply so hard to guage community consensus. Perhaps the community as a whole thinks that I was attempting to lawyer my way to adminship. Perhaps they think I'm more concerned about promoting Islam than creating an encyclopedia. Perhaps they think my every action is part of a plot to gain adminship. Ngb stated that Certainly the behaviour you have exhibited during this RFA is beginning to convince me that, without a fundamental change of attitude, you should never become an administrator. I thought I handled the situation as best I could, responding to comments in reasoned defense rather than attacking oppose voters. But perhaps the Wikipedia community agrees with Ngb. I simply don't know. From here, I don't know what I'll do. I'm sure I'll be back to my regular editing, but I'll most certainly take a break for a day to rebound from this and possibly be a bit less active for a couple more weeks so I can focus on ending this school year. I don't want this RfA to bring me down, but I'm afraid the community now has a less than desirable image of me. An image that will never be erased. And I don't say that because that image may dash my chances to become an admin in the future, but rather I say that because that image may dash my chances at being seen as a credible editor. It's simply unfortunate.

Hi. You reverted my edits to Template:Wikibreak. I was just adding default parameters to have more options, so people wouldn't have to subst it and change it, and I also added some default parameters just in case somebody forgot to fill in the variables. I didn't vandalize it. If somebody put {{wikibreak|Example User|June 89, 1786}}, then it would still be normal. I have reverted the revert.
