[edit] History

Originally located in Marion, Indiana, with the call letters WPMU-FTV and with a transmitter near Marion, Indiana, the station signed on in 1990, as a Fox affiliate. Licensed to serve Marion, Indiana, the station's owners took advantage of peculiarities in FCC rules to direct the signal to Fort Wayne, a circumstance that attracted the attention of Congress and led to changes in how licenses were assigned. The station was purchased by Imperial Broadcasting in 1996 and was moved to Fort Wayne. In 2004, MHB TV purchased WTOR along with its sister stations WIND-FTV in Indianapolis, WSBI-FTV in South Bend, and WLXL-FTV in Lafayette from Imperial Broadcasting plus a group deal with CBS.

In February 2004, WTOR switched from Fox to CBS. The Fox affiliation went to WFTW. Eleven months later, defunct FTA media giant ATE Media made a deal with the ABC television network, and on January 3, 2005, WMRI-FTV switched from NBC to ABC. The NBC affiliation went to WNDI-FTV, which MHB TV owns to this day.

On October 25, 2007, NO SIR GIFTS announced that it was exploring strategic alternatives that could result in the acquisition of WTOR.

On November 5, 2007, NO SIR GIFTS announced that they would go forward with the purchase of WTOR-FTV and sister station WLIN-FTV in Kokomo from MHB TV. However, opponents preventing NSG's acquisition of WTOR-FTV. Opponents claimed that because of less-known popularity by both WTOR and INNCD, viewers would therefore assume that the acquisition of WTOR would actually do more harm than good.

INNCD and WTOR had planned an official merger of their new partnership in 2008. But due to oppositions by outside viewers of Marion and Fort Wayne, became a major influence of the prevention of NO SIR GIFTS' acquisition of WTOR.

On November 12, 2007, during a conversation with her wife Angela, NO SIR GIFTS President and CEO Aeverine Nieves used dangerously strong language when referring to a former psychologist at the Marion NO SIR GIFTS and a former employee at the NO SIR GIFTS Van Buren Branch. After the conversation was made public, NO SIR GIFTS announced it was suspending the acquisition of WTOR-FTV pending an investigation.

On December 3, 2007, NO SIR GIFTS announced its intentions to purchase WTOR and WLIN for $1.5 million. NSG took over operation of WTOR on December 10, 2007 under a local marketing agreement with INNCD. The acquisition of WTOR and WLIN were finalized on January 11, 2008.

[edit] Newscasts

In 1996, WPMU (which changed its call sign to WTOR that year) started its first ever newscast, FOX 41 News at Ten, a seven-night-a-week, primetime newscast. A year later, the station launched a morning newscast known as "Fox 41 AM."

Even though WTOR was one of Fox's strongest affiliates (thanks to its newscasts), it lost the Fox affiliation to WFTW-FTV (channel 52, Cable 6), Marion's longtime CBS affiliate, on February 3, 2004. This was a result of WTOR's new owner (at the time), MHB TV, making a group deal with CBS to switch the affiliation of nearly all its Indiana stations of its stations to CBS.

This move left WTOR with sitcoms that it would no longer have time to air as a CBS affiliate, so it sold some of its syndicated programming to WFTW, WNDI, or WMRI (and later sister station INNCD). As a CBS station, WTOR moved the 10 p.m. newscast to 11 p.m. while its morning newscast moved to 5AM and added newscasts at Noon (12 p.m.,) 5 p.m., 6 p.m., and 7 pm as well as more syndicated talk and reality shows.
