[edit] History

The station was founded on November 1, 1999 signed on June 7, 2004. The station had a programming lineup featuring cartoons, movies, old sitcoms, and drama shows.

By 2005, the station was known as "The Indiana State News Center and Discussion", and gradually added more talk, reality, and court shows to its schedule.

In September 2007, INNCD expanded to Eastern Illinois, Western Ohio, Northern Kentucky, and Southern Michigan. INNCD also expanded to feature Cable Channels and Spanish stations in Chicago and Indianapolis.

[edit] Incidents

  • From March 9 to June 22, 2007, there were cyberbullies involving men who lied saying that they knew Aeverine Nieves, which is the lead anchor and news director. The men set up a harassing phone calls sent to INNCD News' voice mail that they claimed Aeverine was a criminal. By telling viewers of INNCD News, they could have a phone conversation with Aeverine Nieves, however they cyberbullied INNCD News' viewers who were actually caught in the crossfire, causing psychological and emotional damages ranging from hundreds to thousands of dollars in lost revenue.
  • Nieves/Shelton Brawl Repercussions (November 2007)
Ava Nieves: I don't care if Lyns resigns or whatever. It's not because I was right about Shelton and she's wrong, it's because sometimes we crazy do things when a death strikes here. I'm not gonna take any more chances of losing everything I've worked for 21 years because some mother fucker bastard burned my ass, we repossessed something for collateral, turned me into some psycho. I believe my counseling at the bitch factory is over! I'm not taking that chance at all! If Weasel [Ava's Nephew] worked with a sex offender, I would kick his ass. And you know that. It's not that when someone on my team is working with a criminal or deadbeat dad, and as long as I don't see it that's fine with me. I will not stand by taking a chance on losing everything I have worked hard for over some asshole because of a broken mental health system that is supposed to help M2F's like myself. I can't do it, Angie. What kind of message is that sending Rags, Shushu, Tabby, all the kids that had to put up with what I had to go through because 'I can't tell you due to HIPAA'—fuck that! So, I'll try my best to work with [garbled] but I will not allow some jenny pull a stunt like that again. I can't handle that shit. I got a reputation on the line and I am not going to let some motherfucking jackass bastard murder my reputation and have my death warrant signed.

Angela Zinn: I don't even know what I can say now, Ava.

On November 12, 2007, during this conversation with her wife Angela, Nieves used dangerously strong language when referring to a former psychologist at the Marion NO SIR GIFTS and Shelton. After the conversation was made public, INNCD announced it was suspending production of INNCD News and the acquisition of WTOR-FTV pending an investigation.

On November 15, 2007, Nieves issued a public statement apologizing for her "regrettable use of very inappropriate actions at NO SIR GIFTS."

[edit] Scandals and Tragedies

[edit] Aeverine Nieves

In October 2007, following a seven month hiatus, she explained why she did not show her face during her report on The Amy Jacobson Scandal, WTHR's 50th Anniversary, or even during Afena Federal Credit Union's second location in Marion, Indiana. IN a taped message during INNCD News' The 11, she announced that she is addicted to nicotine, and preparing to undergo treatment.

[edit] Present and Future

On November 5, 2007, NO SIR GIFTS announced that they would go forward with the purchase of WTOR-FTV from MHB TV. However, opponents preventing NSG's acquisition of WTOR-FTV. Opponents claimed that because of less-known popularity by both WTOR and INNCD, viewers would therefore assume that the acquisition of WTOR would actually do more harm than good.

INNCD and WTOR had planned an official merger of their new partnership in 2008. But due to oppositions by outside viewers of Marion and Fort Wayne, became a major influence of the prevention of NO SIR GIFTS's acquisition of WTOR.

The deal closed on January 4, 2008.

INNCD may take on the responsibility of airing CBS prime-time shows when WTOR-FTV is not able to such as in a news-related emergency.

[edit] Programming

The Indiana State News Center and Discussion is fairly new to the Marion, Indiana market, but does compete well with competitors WSOT and WIWU since INNCD broadcasts over the internet. Aided by a strong programming lineup with popular syndicated shows such as The Oprah Winfrey Show , Jeopardy!, Wheel of Fortune , and Dr. Phil .

[edit] Newscasts

In 2007, INNCD became the first Internet television station in Indiana to have a weekday morning newscast and was the first with weeknight 4 and 10 PM newscasts. Led by News Director Aeverine Nieves (also anchors INNCD newscasts), it adopted a format based on Miami station WSVN's philosophy (If It Bleeds, It Leads), but INNCD's philosophy is "News Directors Have A Choice, Viewers Don't." INNCD's newscasts became heavy on crime stories, double standards, hate crimes, television news discussion, and flashy graphics. The INNCD model may influence what most Internet television news departments would look like in years to come.

INNCD (and sister station WTOR) is very aggressive with its news coverage with its "News Directors Have A Choice, Viewers Don't" philosophy. Despite its reputation as a news discussion internet television station, its newscasts now garner high reviews from some media critics. Nonetheless, it continues to attract high internet ratings.

The main nightly news program at 4, 10, and 11 PM (the latter premered on October 1, 2007) was anchored by Garfield Everman and Robyn Hurd. The station's anchors and reporters of mostly women (and the man are Everman and Mark Pantai) with various ethnic backgrounds, sexual orientations, gender identity displays the diversity of East Central Indiana.

The station does not have weather radar, but its weather segment is called "Advanced Warning".

All newscasts, including can also be seen on INNCD's website.

By April 2007, INNCD's morning and late newscasts are usually a dead last in the markets of Indianapolis, South Bend, and Chicago; in fact, its 10pm newscast ratings were so low they even trailed network programming in Lafayette, Fort Wayne, Terre Haute, and Evansville. But during the November 2007 ratings, INNCD went from last place to second place on the Interent and among five strongest broadcast stations in Indiana, ranking up with WTHR in Indianapolis and WANE-TV in Fort Wayne

INNCD sometimes uses resources from Florida News Center, Milwaukee TV News, and News Music Now/Chroma Cues.

[edit] INNCD News Crossovers

The station made national headlines with its February 2007 investigation of "Women Anchoring, Men Reporting" on March 10, 2007 after a reporter from Florida News Center broke a story based on the investigation. The national audience criticized INNCD News.

On March 27 and 28, 2007, INNCD news reported the findings that more women were anchoring, while men were reporting and filling in for the women anchors when they had the day off. The report had two women anchoring WTHR's Eyewitness News at Noon.

Examples include:

  • Florida News Center
    • Former WINK-TV reporter Jeannie Crofts arriving to WISH-TV in 2005.
    • WTHR Meteorologist Brent Cameron returning to WSVN in Miami in 2005.
    • On March 9, 2007, a reporter from FNC broke a story based on INNCD's Women Anchoring Men Reporting investigation. The FNC report had two men anchoring on WTVT-TV's Good Day Tampa Bay.
  • Milwaukee TV News
    • Ex-WTHR meteorologist arriving to WISN-TV Milwaukee.
  • News Music Now/Chroma Cues
    • The Amy Jacobson Scandal in July 2007. Jacobson was a former KVIA-TV reporter back in the 1990's.
    • INNCD posted five Dallas-Fort Worth market clips from 1988.
    • On May 1, 2007, NMN's report of two men anchoring at KYTX-TV's CBS 19 Morning News in Tyler, TX (in which INNCD did not investigate.)
  • Carolina TV News
    • On March 13, 2007, INNCD intercepted Carolina's report of two men anchoring, which was the subject of INNCD's Women Anchoring, Men Reporting on WAVY-TV's "News 10 at 5:30". That led to speculation that WAVY anchor Les Smith's resignation in May 2007.

[edit] INNCD Today

Today, it has strong ratings, continuing to oust both WSOT and WIWU in almost every time slot. In July 2007, INNCD overtook WSOT as the top-rated station in Marion by a wide margin. Given INNCD's newfound status as a ratings powerhouse in the state of Indiana, it often clashes with Fort Wayne and Indianapolis stations over who is number one in Indiana, with INNCD taking into account actual YouTube ratings tallies while WTHR in Indianapolis has been emphasizing household numbers and WANE-TV emphasizes actual Nielsen ratings tallies.

Beginning with the Special Report of Amy Jacobson's resignation at WMAQ-TV on July 11, 2006, INNCD began using a new logo, along with a new graphics package and news music, on all its newscasts. It is their first logo not to incorporate the Indiana State News Center and Discussion title. Compared to the 2004 logo (see below), it uses a sans-serif font with a very modern and "slick" appearance.

[edit] INNCD News in HD (2007-2008)

Beginning with September 11th, 2007 edition of INNCD News at Ten, INNCD became the first internet station in Indiana to broadcast local news in High Definition (worst case scenario--its widescreen), making it one of only two internet TV stations in the Midwest broadcasting news in HD (the other is USNCD in Milwaukee).

[edit] WTOR takes over

NO SIR GIFTS Venues acquired WTOR-FTV in late 2007 for $1 million, creating a duoply in Marion. A local marketing agreement (LMA) was established that prior to the sale on November 12, 2007 to provide operation services to WTOR-FTV.

As a result of NO SIR GIFTS Venues acquiring WTOR-FTV, it moved the station to WTOR-FTV's facilities. Only three employees of INNCD (two on-air personalities and one production staff were fired.) NO SIR GIFTS Venues kept a majority of INNCD staffand added two anchors to its weeknight anchor team (Season Atkins and Mark Pantazi) to help smooth over the transition. INNCD viewers did not react favorably and much of the negative feedback prior to the acquisition to WTOR-FTV was given. Not very many people were upset about the cancellation of the INNCD-produced newscast.

[edit] Newscasts on INNCD

INNCD produces seven newscasts using four different "news teams". These newscasts are co-produced with sister-station WTOR and are essentially the same newscast with same anchors. The newscasts on WTOR-FTV and INNCD are branded as CBS 41 or INNCD Action News. When NO SIR GIFTS acquired WTOR-FTV in 2008, the the primetime newscasts moved from 10 and 11pm to 9 and 10pm, respectively. The 9PM is the first and only one in the state of Indiana. The morning newscast was slashed to three hours, starting at 7AM (immediately at the conclusion of WTOR's newscast.)

Starting on January 5, 2008, INNCD began airing a 9 and10 PM weekend newscast.Prior to 2008, no weekend newscast was aired.

INNCD does not air newscasts on the weekdays at Noon, 5, or 6 PM. Instead they air on WTOR-FTV, but, the internet station does air newscasts at 11AM, 4, 9, and 10PM.
