[edit] Overview
Heather is a talking lobster, who has lived with the Willis family since Aeverine picked her up as a stray. While she exhibits some typical crustacean behaviors (ala Zoidberg) like eating garbage, intensely fearing steam, clacking her claws uncontrollably at other crabs and lobsters. She also possesses various anthropomorphic qualities, such as the ability to speak intelligently, drive a car, and walk bipedally. She also has a particularly sharp wit. Angela is her best friend, despite Heather's vastly superior intelligence.
Heather has a cultured background; she loves theater and jazz, and loves to sing.
She is depicted smoking in early episodes and prone to alcoholism (which isn't helped by the fact that she seems to have a very low tolerance for alcohol), and in one episode she gets treatment for pot addiction after becoming a policewoman in Now You See Heather, Now You Don't". She has also referred to buying, being in possession of, or smoking marijuana in the following episodes:
- Angie, Angie, FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT! (Season 5) - When Rags asks how she can watch Fox 11 Heather responds by saying "Pot helps."
While not seen holding a regular job in Quillsville, Heather is depicted owning a car, paying bills, and maintaining a credit card.
[edit] Background
In the QOTW universe, crabs and lobsters are either talking, anthropomorphic creatures like Heather and Zoidberg. Both classes are subject to the same rules, such as not being allowed inside certain shops or to wander the streets without an owner. Heather's "humanity" is rarely remarked upon, an example of Heather's "humanity" is her attraction to human men and transgendered women; Heather has dated several since the show began (such as Zoidberg), and is deeply in love with Aeverine.
Heather was born at sea in Boston, Massachusetts. Her youth and adolescence have not been explored in detail, though it is assumed that at some point in this time she made her way to Indiana. She was homeless, panhandling, and cleaning windows on the side of a highway exit when Aeverine found her. Although she had no money to give Heather, Aeverine felt bad for her, so she brought Heather into the Willis' house and family.
Heather seems somewhat ashamed of her crustacean urges and insecure about her crustacean status in general. She once refused to do degrading pet tricks for Angela during a pet show, despite it being necessary to win the money needed to buy the family a new furnace. She suffers mistreatment as a shellfish, with references to Futurama. She is humiliated when the Willis catch her with crustacean pornography.
[edit] Relationships
[edit] With Tom and Deanna
Heather is one, if not the only, member of the family who does not treat Tom as badly as the others, but she seems to ignore him more than anyone else does.
[edit] With Aeverine
Heather has a special relationship with Aeverine. She realizes that she harbors romantic and sexual feelings towards her in the episode "??", but learns to accept friendship in lieu of a romantic relationship. She additionally reveals that her attraction may go beyond skin-deep; in "Back Home Again in Indiana", as Angela begins to gain weight, a pregnant Angela comments that she is no longer attracted to Aeverine. When she asks Heather (prior to going away with Rags) if Aeverine still is, Heather replies, "I don't care what she looks like, I would wreck that chick." To which Angela replies simply, "Well, you are a hussy".
[edit] With Angela
As Angela's best friend, Heather has had to adapt to Angela being substantially less intelligent than Heather.
[edit] With Rags
Haphazard rivals yet undoubtedly loyal companions, Heather and Rags have similar levels of intelligence and sophistication, and suffer comparable reality-based shortcomings (being respectively a dog and a lobster). Despite their time-to-time rivalry, the two are best of friends, and have helped each other out whenever possible. The best way to describe it would be a love-hate relationship.
Heather and Rags are often paired in storylines as a comedy duo, especially in the Back Home Again in... episodes. In these and other episodes Heather is sometimes charged by Aeverine and/or Angela with caring for Rags, sometimes along with the kids, Tom and Deanna, in addition to the Willis Sextuplets begining in Season 3.
Even though most adult characters seem to at least occasionally understand Rags, only Heather fully considers what Rags says, and only Heather notices how abnormal Rags' behavior is.
