Nathan Schmitt grew up listening to such classic artists as Bob Dylan, Neil Young, and Frank Zappa. At the age of thirteen he was inspired to play the Alto Saxophone by his high school band director Dan Schauffler, who played with, among others, the Crazy 8's and Nu Shooz. A year later he started humbly on guitar and three years after that, switched from Alto to Tenor saxophone. Throughout high school he played with school-mates in various projects but never formed a stable band. Among the various projects were Pep Smear, who played mostly heavy rock and metal, and a performance group that performed songs by Ayreon, The Eagles, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

During spring of 2005, he traveled to South Korea with his jazz quintet known as "The Quintet"(informally known as "Slightly Off White" or just "Off White"). The band consisted of Nathan Schmitt on Tenor Sax, Scott Yorke on Trumpet, Keshav Kini on Keys, Dan Schaffman on Bass, and Glen Thonis on Drums. To raise money for this trip, The Quintet recorded an album of jazz standards, entitled "The Maiden Voyage" which features NsGuitar1's rendition of "Blue Bossa" on guitar.

Schmitt is currently working on a solo project that he started composing at the beginning of the summer of 2006.
