The NS Railinfratrust Company (RIT) is the owner of the Dutch railtracks. ProRail B.V is part of RIT that takes care of maintenance and extension of the national railway network infrastructure, of allocating rail capacity, and of traffic control. Railinfratrust is a government agency.

Although NS Railinfratrust has the same the name as the Nederlandse Spoorwegen, it is not the same company.

It consists of the following inframanagement organisations:

  • Railinfrabeheer (Rail Infrastructure Management, RIB)
  • Railned (railway capacity allocation) (planning more than 52 hours before the day of the train service)
  • Railverkeersleiding (Traffic Control) (planning from 52 hours before the day of the train service)

NS Railinfratrust Ltd was founded by the liberation of the Dutch track ways in 1995, as holding company of the three organisations NS Railinfrabeheer (RIB), Railned and NS Verkeersleiding (NSVL). These three NS-organisations work for the Ministry of Traffic and Water. However, they weere part of the of the NS-organisation, with the intention the tasks will which are considered couple as government tasks separately from the NS. On 1 July 2002 NS Railinfratrust from NS-holding have been obtained. Since 1 January 2003 NS Railinfratrust have used the trading name of ProRail. On 1 January 2003 the three railinfratrust companies merged: NS Railinfrabeheer Ltd, Railverkeersleiding Ltd and Railned Ltd to ProRail Ltd. Without the railway security task of Railned, that wil go to the inspection service of the ministry of traffic and water. ProRail Ltd exist since then from the divisions capacity management, traffic control, Inframanagement, Infraprojecten, track development and Ict-services.
