[edit] Why Wikipedia?
I've started the discussion here because it provides a forum where it is easy for anyone to contribute. I also hope that the content generated from this project can be reincorporated in Wikipedia to improve coverage of Hmong history and culture. Wikimedia software is a prevalent wiki platform and eventually could hosted off-site, but using the same format. Wikipedia also provides a well-developed set of guidelines regarding the reliability of contributions and the free sharing of ideas. It could be that this format will not meet the needs of the project longterm, but its a start. Nposs 05:37, 24 May 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Suggested map sections
The map could be organized in a variety of ways, but the following groups of map locations could be a useful starting point:
- Places important to Hmong history in general (Nong Het, Plain of Jars, etc.)
- Places important to the Secret War and early refugee experience (Long Cheng, Ban Vinai, etc.)
- Places important in the Diaspora (major Hmong population centers around the world)
- Places important in the ongoing conflicts in Laos and Thailand (Nong Khai, Khao Kho, etc.)
I'll place these headers below for further discussion and new headers (or even subpages can be added as necessary). For instance, at some point it would be interesting to add content about Hmong people in China, etc. Nposs 05:27, 24 May 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Needs
Immediate needs (if you know these locations, just post the lat/long and I'll add them to the map):
- More accurate location for Ban Vinai (and other major refugee camps) - I only have a place marker for Pak Chom at the moment
- More detailed locations for the ongoing refugee crisis in Thailand (Ban Huai Nam Khao?)
- Important locations outside of SE Asia: major communities in Australia, US, etc.
