Nowlin Middle School is a comprehensive middle school located at 2800 Hardy in Independence, Missouri. It is part of the Independence School District.
After a vote to allow Nowlin and seven other schools in Independence to be removed from the Kansas City district, the school will lose students living outside of Independence. Since Independence students generally score above Kansas City students, the school's test scores may rise. In the 2007-2008 school year, between 60 percent and 70 percent of the students at each grade level live in Independence or Sugar Creek.[1]
In 2007 the school failed to meet "adequate yearly progress" requirements of the Missouri Assessment Program exam in any subgroup (such as students with disabilities or students from low-income families) for either subject — communication arts or mathematics. The school also failed to meet requirements for its attendance rate, a category it met in 2006.[2]
