[edit] History
The school was created in September 1974 when the London Borough of Harrow, adopted a comprehensive system of education. Before this it was known as Headstone Secondary Modern School.
[edit] Motto and ethos
Nower Hill's motto is Service not Self and the school's official ethos is Challenge, support, trust, integrity, respect, equality of opportunity, collaboration, celebration, a ‘can do' attitude, and service not self.
These ideals lead to the school's involvement in the local community and charitable events such as "Children in Need", "Red Nose Day", and fundraising for St Luke's Hospice charity. The school has Mufti days mostly at the end of half term when students bring £1 in for charity. The school holds a Christmas dinner every year, where pupils and teachers dine with the elderly of the community.
Every year Nower Hill organises a school prom and boat trip in London for Year 11 students for their departure to college, university etc
Nower Hill has a Football and Basketball team for each year and a girls Netball and Trampolining team. The school takes part in many sports and sportmarked by UK Sport
The school encourages students to be streetwise and holds "Citizenship Days" for students to look at and discuss different aspects of life in the wider, adult world.
[edit] Football Achievement
Our Yr 11 2008 football team won the Harrow League cup, Harrow League and Middlesex Cup. The final was played against Kingsmead FC by a narrow 1-0 defeat in extra time. The players conducted themselves perfectly while celebrating.
[edit] Uniform
The uniform for years 8, 9 and 10, boys wear white shirts, blue tie with a navy blue blazer. Girls wear white blouses and a navy blue jumper with the Nower Hill badge on the left hand side and a standard blue tie (also with the Nower Hill logo). Students must wear black shoes, Personal Trainers are not allowed. Prefects wear silver knuckle dusters. Students in Year 11 wear red ties. Sixth Formers must wear smart casual clothing.
[edit] General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE)
At Nower Hill and other London schools GCSE is graded on scale of A*; A; B; C; D; E; F; G; with U as Unclassified (Failed). Nower Hill produces results well below both local and national averages.
Although any grade from A*-G is officially a pass, many employers accept only A*-C grades this is because the style and use of different positions is generally not considered as important as overall time elapsed and a convincing performance. The headline official school league table also measures only A*-C grades achieved. There is no consistent correlation between exam percentages and the grade awarded, which will vary depending on the subject, examination board, and year.
