[edit] Flag

I will be experimenting the posting of the respective flag for article associated with the country, by replacing the bullet with the respective national flag, as the followings:

29-30 ARTSingapore

Loris Capirossi wins the 2005 edition of the Malaysian Motorcycle Grand Prix at the Sepang International Circuit but Valentino Rossi clinches the championship. (Bernama) (CNN) (CNN/SI)

I am still looking into ways to include a wider space between the flag and the texts. Do contribute.

Wah...quite nice, but wont this create an overwelming parade of flags? :D Btw, how about Malaysian state flags for state-specific events?--Huaiwei 12:30, 28 September 2005 (UTC)
It would really be a flurry of flags if Malaysian states flags are also used, are you sure you want that? :P --Andylkl (talk) 13:21, 28 September 2005 (UTC)
Haha if we are going to do this, we might as well go all the way. :D Think it will look even more impressive that way. Btw, what about My-sg news pieces? Have both flags represented?--Huaiwei 13:53, 28 September 2005 (UTC)
We'll just stick to MY and SG flags first for the time being. :) --Andylkl (talk) 15:27, 28 September 2005 (UTC)

I experimented a little, and it seems it could be done with some wiki markup, although it might look a bit cumbersome. Perhaps the codes used to create the style below could be condensed into a template? --Andylkl (talk) 13:15, 28 September 2005 (UTC)

A template should be quite simple to make. Meanwhile, others have any comments on this please?--Huaiwei 13:53, 28 September 2005 (UTC)

[edit] MY and SG templates

Okay, I've finished creating the templates, just copy and paste the codes below and replace the appropriate words.

This code...

{{MYnews|news=News summary|url=[Link to article (Name of source)]}}

results in this:

  News summary [Link to article (Name of source)]

And this code...

{{SGnews|news=News summary|url=[Link to article (Name of source)]}}

results in this:

  News summary [Link to article (Name of source)]

Hope this makes contributing to this article more easier. :) --Andylkl (talk) 15:27, 28 September 2005 (UTC)

Eh, seems there's a few kinks that needed to be ironed out, hold on for a while... --Andylkl (talk) 15:49, 28 September 2005 (UTC)
How about cases where there are more then one sources? To make things easier for you, how about just having the templates for the flags?--Huaiwei 15:51, 28 September 2005 (UTC)
It's still usable if there's more than one source, just follow the usual wiki coding format for external links:

{{SGnews|news=News summary|url=[http://source1.com (Source 1)] [http://source2.com (Source 2)] [http://source3.com (Source 3)]}}

If we use the templates for only the flags, there's no formatting for the text that comes after the flags and the text will just wrap around the flag. If the above template is used, the flags are used as bullets for each news item. Anyways, how does the new format look? :)--Andylkl (talk) 16:12, 28 September 2005 (UTC)
Ah I see. Btw, I notice the infobox seems to be stretched across the top of the page now. Can we restore it to its correct location on the right?--Huaiwei 16:28, 28 September 2005 (UTC)
Done! --Andylkl (talk) 16:33, 28 September 2005 (UTC)
Ahh...pretty! Now I await the state flags, and if they are not forthcoming, I shall be bold and do it! :D--Huaiwei 17:11, 28 September 2005 (UTC)

On second thoughts, I have to admit that it's somewhat troublesome. If someone else can suggest a better idea on how to simplify, it'd be greatly appreciated.

Another idea I have is to keep the green square-ish bullets and place [[Image:Malaysia flag large.png|25px]] or [[Image:Flag of Singapore.svg|25px]]. Although no flag bullets, it's much much much simpler. :) --Andylkl (talk) 08:34, 29 September 2005 (UTC)

I am perfectly ok with this version too. How about having the flags slightly smaller? And yeah...I am yeaning for the state flags, but the Labuan flag is missing. ;)--Huaiwei 13:21, 29 September 2005 (UTC)
Alright, Image:Flag of Labuan.gif has just been uploaded. Your wish has been granted. :) Flags are now at 20px, but I'm concerned people can't make out what flag it is if it's that small. --Andylkl (talk) 14:05, 29 September 2005 (UTC)
But thats the idea...make then hover or even click on the flags! :D Btw once we have these flags, we no longer need to constantly make references to which country the news is related to, so that is an additional plus. Anyway, I am gonna play around the with flags now...and see if the size is alright. :D--Huaiwei 14:16, 29 September 2005 (UTC)
Oui, I was just away for a couple of days and everything's done. Hehe. I will suggest though to increase the 20px-standard used currently to 23px, couldn't much see the stars right now. ::::

Wonderful! But one thing I noticed was the horrible loading times for the flag pics (even though I'm on a 512Kbps connection), think a smaller version of the flags need to be uploaded. --Andylkl (talk) 16:01, 29 September 2005 (UTC)
Either that or maybe Wikimedia's servers are having problems today, I had at least one error message. --Andylkl (talk) 16:11, 29 September 2005 (UTC)
Yeah I noticed the slow loading times yesterday, thou it works ok now. Shall we use them? ;)--Huaiwei 16:35, 30 September 2005 (UTC)
Yup! --Andylkl (talk) 17:51, 30 September 2005 (UTC)

I just applied the state maps to the article. How does it look?--Huaiwei 18:06, 30 September 2005 (UTC)

It looks slightly weird actually. o_O --Andylkl (talk) 18:10, 30 September 2005 (UTC)
Haha why? I kinda like the splash of colours leh.--Huaiwei 18:13, 30 September 2005 (UTC)
I most likely need to be adjusted to it. :P It's still looks good though. :) --Andylkl (talk) 18:18, 30 September 2005 (UTC)
Walao speak your mind leh...haha. If its due to political sensitivity or anything, please do speak it up, because it is an important consideration. I am not too sure if having state flags mixed with national flags is considered an anormality to others, so I am open to more views on this.--Huaiwei 18:32, 30 September 2005 (UTC)
Nothing about political sensitivity, it's about the mixing of the flags which makes it look weird. State level flags generally doesn't mix with national level flags. --Andylkl (talk) 18:42, 30 September 2005 (UTC)
Ah....exactly what I tot might be of concern. Could you get more of your Malaysian folks to look at this and comment (even people outside wikipedia)? I will try to get the "singies" to review it too.--Huaiwei 18:49, 30 September 2005 (UTC)
No problems on that. It's October already, better add the Sept 30 section, some more SG-related news and archive it as last month's news. :) --Andylkl (talk) 19:04, 30 September 2005 (UTC)
Which is why I am rushing to add sg news now! :D Anyway dont worry...after its archieved, you can still edit it. And perhaps you might consider adding old news to all our archieved pages too? I noe that is a hell lot of work, so dont rush! :D--Huaiwei 19:55, 30 September 2005 (UTC)
I think can lar, looks quite nice wat, also is a very good way to visually organize information.... as long as the flag codes of Singapore or Malaysia do not prohibit this, I think should be okay lar. -- ran (talk) 23:48, 30 September 2005 (UTC)
I remade a couple of the flags, they are now SVG (Image:Selangor flag.svg, Image:Terengganu flag.svg). You may use the new versions instead, as I'm listing the previous versions for deletion. –Mysid (talk) 07:39, 19 October 2005 (UTC)
