Novica Cerović (Serbian Cyrillic: Новица Цepoвић) (born 1805, Savnik, Montenegro, death 1895) was a Montenegrin hero and Duke.
[edit] Life
His most noted act was leading a successful assault to kill local Muslim tyrant Smail-aga Čengić under the leading of Petar II Petrović-Njegoš[1] there by freeing Montenegro and nearby areas from the Ottoman Empire. His heroism and the death of Smail-aga Čengić was the theme of Ivan Mažuranić's poem "Smrt Smail-age Čengića" ("The Death of Smail-aga Čengić"), a hymn celebrating the struggle for freedom. Sometime after freeing Montenegro, the clan of Cerović moved to Serbia, with some remaining in Montenegro. Today his direct descendants live in Vojvodina.
There is a tower in Tusin named after him (The tower of Duke Novice Cerovic).
