- 1863 – Gov. Stanford, Central Pacific Railroad's first locomotive, enters service in California.[1]
- 1885 – The last spike is driven on the California Southern Railroad between Barstow and San Bernardino through Cajon Pass, completing the connection to the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad.[2]

- 1903 – The 2 ft 6 in (762 mm) gauge Kalka-Shimla Railway opens in India.
- 1933 – Canadian National Railway's line to Lynn Lake, Manitoba, opens.
- 1953 – Canadian National Railway extends the line from Lynn Lake to Sherridon, Manitoba.
- 1953 – Canadian Pacific Railway introduces Budd Rail Diesel Car service, "Dayliners", for lighter passenger train duties on some branch lines.
- 1963 – Two passenger trains collide with a derailed freight train on the Tōkaidō Main Line in Yokohama, Japan; the Yokohama rail crash results in 161 deaths.
- 1998 – The St. Thomas and Eastern Railway begins operations on a former Canadian National Railway branch line between St. Thomas and Delhi, Ontario.

- 1803 – Henry Farnam, president of the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad 1854–1863, is born (d. 1883).
- 1869 – Charles Donnelly, president of Northern Pacific Railway 1920-1939, is born (d. 1939).[3]
