Nouse is a student newspaper at the University of York. Founded in 1964 by student Nigel Fountain, some twenty years before its rival York Vision, it is seen as the more serious of the two newspapers. Nouse comes out three times a term and has an estimated readership of 10,000.

It has changed dramatically in outlook and presentation over the years, being known at one point as the Nouse Co-operative or NouseCoop, and presenting itself as a samizdat publication throughout the 1980s. In its current incarnation, Nouse is a left-of-centre paper with serious aspirations of broadsheet reputation. In fact, the last edition of the 2006-07 academic year was printed in full-size broadsheet format to widespread acclaim.

It is an urban myth that the name Nouse derives from the Greek word Nous and the River Ouse. The name of the newspaper is simply a corruption of the word "Ouse" to rhyme with "news".

In last few years Nouse has become one of the University's largest media societies, picking up multiple nominations and wins in the National Student Journalism Awards and Guardian Student Media Awards.

The Borthwick Institute at the University of York Library has an archive of Nouse editions that stretches back to the first edition 1964.

Nouse is currently edited by Raf Sanchez. The main section, Nouse, contains a large and well-informed news section, a national politics section, comment and opinions section and sports. The Arts and Features supplement, Muse, runs a wide and varied spread of features and articles, and also boasts columns and satire pages.

2005 saw the paper claim the top prize of Best Student Newspaper category at the NUS/Mirror National Student Journalism Awards, and runner-up at the Guardian Student Newspaper Awards. It was also the only newspaper to be nominated in the design category for the NUS/Mirror awards. In 2006 Nouse was nominated for Best Student Newspaper at the Guardian Student Media Awards and the National Student Journalism Awards, as well as another Guardian nomination for Best Publication Design. Toby Green was nominated for Best Features Writer at the NUS Awards. Nouse's success continued in 2007, with former editor Heidi Blake named Guardian Student Journalist of the Year, Best Features Writer and Best Diversity Writer. The Nouse website, Nouse.co.uk came runner up in the Best Website category.

In common with many newspapers, Nouse is expanding into the field of new media. It is one of only four UK student papers to publish a podcast, the others being York Vision, Cambridge's Varsity and Oxford's Cherwell.
